Moments after a Florida jury convicted 59-year-old Ryan Routh of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump, the courtroom erupted into chaos as Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen.

His courtroom meltdown capped off a bizarre and disturbing legal saga that revealed just how calculated and deadly serious this assassination attempt really was.

Caring for the country doesn’t include trying to assassinate the next president of the United States. But this is the kind of twisted thinking that’s being enabled by the unhinged rhetoric coming from the radical left, Hollywood activists, and an increasingly desperate Democrat establishment.

Let’s not forget:

• Donald Trump remains the most targeted political figure in modern history, facing not only legal harassment but now multiple assassination attempts including this one, and the shooter at the Pennsylvania rally just months ago.

• The media barely blinked at this assassination trial. Swap the names and imagine the headlines if this were a plot to kill Joe Biden.

• And yet, Trump continues to lead with polls showing him ahead in most battleground states, even after years of political and physical attacks.

The courtroom incident, where Routh tried to stab himself after hearing the verdict, only underscores the disturbed nature of the man behind the attempted killing. Thankfully, law enforcement officers acted quickly, restraining him before he could do serious harm to himself or others.

Judge Eileen Cannon, who oversaw the trial, had warned Routh that representing himself was a “bad idea.” She was right.
