Trump Selects Pam Bondi as U.S. Attorney General

Former Florida Attorney General promises to restore law and order to a partisan DOJ.

President-elect Donald Trump has named Pam Bondi, former Attorney General of Florida, as his pick for U.S. Attorney General. This announcement follows the withdrawal of Rep. Matt Gaetz from consideration, citing concerns that his confirmation had become a distraction to the Trump-Vance transition.

“I am proud to announce former Attorney General of the Great State of Florida, Pam Bondi, as our next Attorney General of the United States,” Trump declared in a statement Thursday evening. “Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on violent criminals and made the streets safe for Florida families.”

Trump highlighted Bondi’s tenure as Florida’s first female Attorney General, where she made combating drug trafficking and addressing the fentanyl crisis top priorities. Under her leadership:

  • Bondi pushed for stronger legislation against opioid manufacturers and distributors, helping to reduce overdose deaths in Florida.

  • She worked extensively to dismantle drug-trafficking networks across the state.

  • Bondi served on Trump’s Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during his first term, earning praise for her efforts to save lives amid the crisis.

“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans. Not anymore,” Trump asserted. “Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting crime and making America safe again.”

Matt Gaetz, who had resigned from Congress to prepare for the Attorney General role, stepped back from the nomination process on Thursday. While his Capitol Hill meetings with senators reportedly went well, Gaetz expressed concerns that his confirmation process had become needlessly divisive.

“There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle,” Gaetz stated. “I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.”

Gaetz has faced intense scrutiny due to a House Ethics Committee investigation into alleged sexual misconduct, with fresh allegations surfacing this week. The Department of Justice previously investigated Gaetz for alleged sex trafficking but declined to press charges. Despite the controversy, Gaetz maintains his innocence and pledged continued support for Trump’s agenda.

Trump expressed gratitude for Gaetz’s efforts, saying, “Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!”

Pam Bondi’s appointment signals a strong pivot for the Department of Justice under a Trump administration. With her proven track record in law enforcement and her commitment to tackling crime, Bondi is poised to bring much-needed reform to an agency plagued by partisan politics.

As Trump prepares to take office in 2024, Bondi’s leadership at the DOJ will be critical in restoring public trust and addressing America’s growing crime and drug crises.
