Texas Moves to Ban Non-Citizen Voting in State Elections

Governor Abbott takes a bold stand as states push back against Democrat-led efforts to dilute election integrity.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott just sent a resounding message to anyone trying to water down the sanctity of American elections only U.S. citizens can vote period.

On Monday, Abbott signed a joint resolution that would amend the Texas Constitution to explicitly ban non-citizens from voting in state elections. “I just signed off on a joint resolution to make it crystal clear under the Texas Constitution that if you are not a citizen of the United States of America, you are not allowed to vote in Texas,” Abbott declared in a video posted to X.

The resolution, SJR 37, introduced by Republican State Senator Brian Birdwell, adds simple but vital language to the law: persons who are not U.S. citizens "shall not be allowed to vote." It’s a long-overdue clarification in an era where the radical left is blurring every line that defines what it means to be an American.

Before this measure, the Texas Constitution already excluded convicted felons, minors, and those deemed mentally incompetent from voting. Now, non-citizens will be officially added to that list if Texas voters approve the amendment in November.

This commonsense safeguard comes as a wave of Democrat-aligned judges and activists attempt to sabotage voter ID laws, block citizenship verification, and open the door to non-citizen participation in U.S. elections:

  • Last month, a Clinton-appointed federal judge blocked key parts of a Trump-era executive order that would have required documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote.

  • The ruling claimed the president lacks the authority to implement such election integrity measures despite widespread public support for exactly that.

  • According to the Voting Rights Lab, 25 states are now considering similar legislation, and 15 already have constitutional bans on non-citizen voting.

Make no mistake: this is a fight for the soul of the republic. The left has spent years pushing policies that erode the meaning of citizenship sanctuary cities, mass amnesty, open borders, and yes, allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections like we’ve seen in San Francisco and New York City.

Governor Abbott’s move doesn’t just reinforce state law it sends a national message that the people of Texas are taking back control of their elections. No foreign nationals. No illegal votes. No exceptions.

As we barrel toward 2024, the stakes couldn’t be higher. The Democrats’ war on election integrity is real, and Republicans across the country must follow Texas’ lead by enshrining one simple truth: only American citizens decide American elections.
