Eric Swalwell Vows to Bury Republicans in Redistricting Fight

California Democrat abandons unity talk, calls for political warfare to protect progressive power.

So much for “when they go low, we go high.”

Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell made it perfectly clear over the weekend that he and his party are done with the whole unity charade. In a fiery appearance on CNN, Swalwell outright rejected former First Lady Michelle Obama’s signature mantra and declared that Democrats will now "bury" Republicans literally “below the Capitol.”

That’s not hyperbole. That’s a direct quote.

Swalwell was responding to questions about the Democrats’ aggressive push for redistricting tactics to counter Republican-led map changes in states like Texas. When asked if this could backfire on the party, he didn’t mince words. "No, when they go low, we're going to bury them below the Capitol. That's what we're going to do, because this is about protecting democracy."

Let’s be honest: this isn’t about democracy. It’s about raw power.

Here’s what’s really going on:

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom is backing a radical plan to eliminate five GOP-held congressional seats through a new mid-decade redistricting proposal.

  • This proposal violates California’s own state constitution, which mandates that redistricting be done by an independent, nonpartisan commission not political power players like Newsom.

  • Democrats are pushing for a special election to give them constitutional authority to ram through these changes and tip the electoral scales further in their favor.

Swalwell is now openly justifying the abandonment of democratic norms as a necessary step to stop Donald Trump and Republican gains. His logic? That Democrats have been “too weak” in the past and must now fight back with equal or greater aggression.

“We have paid the price for our weakness in the past, and we can’t be so weak next time we have power.”

That’s the modern Democrat Party in a nutshell: accuse the other side of threatening democracy while actively undermining it themselves.

Ironically, Swalwell accused Trump of "grabbing for power" through redistricting while fully supporting Newsom’s effort to circumvent California’s constitution to do the same. The hypocrisy is so blatant it’s hard to believe he kept a straight face.

The American people aren’t stupid. They’re watching the same Democrats who once cried about fairness and transparency now salivating over the chance to rig the game in their favor. Swalwell’s rhetoric is just the latest proof that the party of “unity” and “democracy” is only interested in those things when they’re winning.

And just in case anyone forgot, this isn’t the first time the left has flirted with violent language. Swalwell joins a long line of Democrats who’ve traded Michelle Obama’s polished messaging for threats, ultimatums, and backroom power plays.

We’re past the point of pretending they want to govern. This is about domination plain and simple.
