Supreme Court Asks the Administration to Weigh In on Iowa Immigration Law
The justices want the solicitor general's view before deciding what to do with Iowa's blocked immigration law.
The Supreme Court on Monday asked the solicitor general for the administration's view on whether Iowa can enforce its immigration law, Law360 reports. The request came in the court's Monday order list, according to Law360's Britain Eakin.
The law lets state officials arrest noncitizens who were previously deported from the United States, according to Law360. It also requires state judges to order those individuals to leave the country. The law is currently blocked while the case moves through the courts.
The justices did not rule Monday on whether the law can take effect. They asked the solicitor general for the administration's position first, and the law stays blocked in the meantime. Law360's case information lists the Iowa Attorney General's Office, the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa and the American Immigration Council in connection with the case.
