Crime Scene Declared in Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother

Authorities believe Today Show host’s 84-year-old mother did not leave home willingly, investigation intensifies in Arizona.

Savannah Guthrie, the familiar face of NBC’s Today Show, is now facing every family’s nightmare: her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, has been declared missing under suspicious circumstances, and her Arizona home has been labeled an active crime scene.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office made the declaration Monday, abruptly ending what began as a routine search-and-rescue effort. Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed, “We do in fact have a crime scene, we do in fact have a crime.” That blunt announcement has sent shockwaves through both the tight-knit Tucson community and the national media landscape.

Evidence inside Nancy’s home suggests she did not leave voluntarily. Security camera footage is currently under review, and the public is being asked to comb through their own video recordings in the surrounding area especially around the time of her disappearance late Saturday evening.

Nancy, who has no cognitive issues but suffers from limited physical mobility, was last seen at 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. When she didn’t show up for church the next morning, her family knew something was wrong. Authorities now confirm her phone was found inside the home, which only deepens the mystery.

Sheriff Nanos made an emotional appeal to the public “We don’t need another bad, tragic ending. We need some help. If you’ve seen something even if it didn’t seem suspicious at the time it may be the key.”

Savannah Guthrie released a statement during Monday’s Today Show broadcast “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”

The host, who has frequently spoken about her close relationship with her mother, rushed to Arizona upon learning of her disappearance. Guthrie lost her father at age 16 and often credits Nancy for raising three children as a single mother sometimes even featuring her on national television.

Description of Nancy Guthrie:

  • Height: 5’5”

  • Weight: 150 lbs

  • Hair: Brown

  • Eyes: Blue

  • Last seen: Saturday night at her home near Tucson, AZ

Authorities do not believe the public is in danger, but have not ruled out foul play. As of now, there are no suspects publicly named, and the investigation is ongoing.

If you or anyone you know has information, contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900. Law enforcement is asking residents in the area to check security footage from the evening of Saturday, Feb. 3 through Sunday morning for any unusual activity.

In a media landscape known more for celebrity drama than real heartbreak, this case reminds us that no one no matter how public or private is immune to tragedy. For Savannah Guthrie and her family, what matters most now is hope, prayer, and the full weight of justice.
