Bernie Sanders Offers to Help Trump Cut Drug Prices If He’s Serious

Left-wing populist joins Trump’s push against Big Pharma as executive order sends shockwaves through Washington.

In a political twist that no one saw coming, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has offered to help President Donald Trump take on Big Pharma but only if Trump is “serious” about ending the prescription drug price racket that has fleeced American families for decades.

The surprising offer came just after Trump signed what he called one of the most consequential executive orders in U.S. history: a bold policy that will tie U.S. prescription drug prices to the lowest prices paid by other developed nations. The plan also allows for direct-to-consumer purchases at those rates, cuts off the freeloading by countries like Germany and Canada, and slams the door shut on the pharmaceutical industry’s price-gouging monopoly.

“I agree with President Trump: It is an outrage that the American people pay, by far, the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs,” Sanders said. “The extraordinarily greedy pharmaceutical industry made over $100 billion in profits last year by ripping off the American people.”

This is the first time Sanders has publicly aligned with Trump on a major policy initiative but it’s also a testament to just how powerful this executive order really is. The issue of drug prices has long united Americans across the political spectrum, and now even the far-left is being forced to admit Trump is getting the job done.

Trump’s announcement wasn’t made alone. Standing beside him was Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who himself ran a populist Democratic campaign in 2024 and has blasted both parties for failing to take on Big Pharma. Kennedy called the executive order the realization of Bernie’s longtime campaign message:

“We finally have a president who’s willing to stand up for the American people,” Kennedy said. “This is the fulcrum of what Bernie’s campaign was all about.”

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Sen. Peter Welch (D-VT) are already moving to cement Trump’s executive order into law through the "Fair Prescription Drug Prices for Americans Act." Their bill would:

  • Cap U.S. drug prices at the average paid in Canada, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, and the U.K.

  • Penalize price gougers with 10x financial penalties per unit sold above the international average

  • End the era of pharmaceutical companies making U.S. consumers foot the global bill

Let’s not forget, Trump already tackled this issue in his first term, but was stonewalled by lobbyists, Democrats, and weak Republicans alike. Now, with a second-term mandate and a team ready to fight, he’s taking the gloves off.

While Sanders claims Trump’s executive order could be thrown out in court, what’s undeniable is this Trump is doing more to lower drug prices than Biden, Obama, and Bush combined ever did. For 20 years, politicians promised to fix this and now it’s finally happening.

Whether or not Bernie follows through on his offer remains to be seen. But the fact that he had to tip his cap to Trump at all? That tells you everything you need to know about who’s really leading for the American people.
