Rubio U.S. Successfully Rescued 5 Hostages Held by Maduro Regime

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Tuesday night that the United States has successfully rescued five Venezuelan opposition figures who had been held hostage for months by Nicolás Maduro’s socialist regime at the Argentinian Embassy in Caracas.

The dramatic rescue marks a major foreign policy victory for the Trump administration, showcasing its renewed resolve to confront socialist tyrants and defend democracy abroad.

“Following a precise operation, all hostages are now safely on U.S. soil,” Rubio wrote on X. “Maduro’s illegitimate regime has undermined Venezuela’s institutions, violated human rights, and endangered our regional security.”

The five individuals members of Venezuela’s political opposition had taken refuge in the Argentinian ambassador’s residence in March 2024 after Maduro’s regime issued arrest warrants accusing them of inciting violence. Since November, they had been surrounded by regime agents and cut off from the outside world, turning the diplomatic residence into a de facto prison.

Their rescue comes just months after Argentine President Javier Milei met with opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia, whom Milei publicly declared “Venezuela’s president-elect,” rejecting the results of the July 2024 sham election Maduro claimed to have won.

• Milei called the election a fraud, declaring: “Venezuelans have chosen to end Nicolás Maduro’s communist dictatorship.”

• Argentina’s government recognized González Urrutia as Venezuela’s rightful leader and denounced Maduro’s persecution.

The U.S. mission, carried out with the cooperation of Argentine authorities, ensured that the five political prisoners were safely extracted from the embassy and brought to U.S. soil.

“We extend our gratitude to all personnel involved in this operation and to our partners who assisted in securing the safe liberation of these Venezuelan heroes,” Rubio said.
