Rubio Praises JD Vance Amid Speculation About 2028 Presidential Run
Secretary of State calls Trump’s VP a “close friend” and “great nominee” as talk of future campaigns heats up.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio deflected questions about his own political future on Saturday, instead offering high praise for Vice President JD Vance during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s My View with Lara Trump.
When asked by host Lara Trump about rumors that he is “frequently mentioned” as a possible contender for the 2028 presidential race, Rubio was quick to highlight Vance. “Well, I think JD Vance would be a great nominee,” Rubio said. “He’s doing a great job as vice president. He’s a close friend. And I hope he intends to do it.”
Rubio, who has taken on a critical foreign policy role under President Donald Trump’s second administration, made it clear that he is focused on his current job.
“Being in the role that I’m in here at the Secretary of State, I really don’t play in politics,” Rubio noted. “There’s actually rules against me being involved in domestic politics. I want to do this job as long as the president allows me to do it, which would keep me here all the way through January of 2028.”
The former Florida senator, who competed against Trump in the 2016 GOP primaries before aligning with him, praised the president’s leadership and accomplishments during the first six months of his second term.
“We’re doing some special things that I think are going to bear fruit for a generation,” Rubio said.
He described his tenure as Secretary of State as potentially the “apex” of his public career.
Rubio emphasized that while “you never rule things out,” his primary focus remains on executing Trump’s foreign policy agenda.
President Trump has previously mentioned both Vance and Rubio when asked about potential successors. During a May interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump praised his vice president as “a fantastic, brilliant guy” while also highlighting Rubio’s leadership.
“There’s a lot of good people in this party,” Trump said. “Certainly, you would say that somebody’s the VP, if that person is outstanding, that person would have an advantage.”
Rubio also spoke about his close relationship with Trump and Vance, pointing out that their partnership began after he supported Trump’s first White House bid. “I was in the Senate during the four years of his first term. We got a lot done together,” he said, adding that Trump’s decision to select Vance as VP created “a great team.”
As 2028 speculation ramps up, Rubio’s remarks suggest he may be more interested in shaping the future of American foreign policy under Trump than positioning himself for a White House bid at least for now.
