Tommy Robinson Acquitted After UK Court Crushes Bogus Terror Charge

Judge rules police targeted him for his beliefs as Elon Musk steps in to defend free speech in Britain.

In a resounding victory for truth and liberty, British journalist and political activist Tommy Robinson has been acquitted of a baseless terror charge after a judge ruled his arrest and prosecution were politically motivated. The decision not only vindicates Robinson, but also shines a harsh light on the growing abuse of state power in Britain where dissent is increasingly treated as a threat.

Robinson had been arrested in July 2024 under the UK’s Terrorism Act after refusing to hand over the passcode to his phone while driving through the Channel Tunnel in a friend’s Bentley. Police claimed they were suspicious, despite having no legitimate grounds for believing Robinson was involved in any criminal activity. What they were clearly interested in, however, was silencing a man who has become a major thorn in the side of Britain’s political class.

Judge Sam Goozee dismantled the prosecution’s case in court this week, ruling the stop was driven not by law enforcement concerns but by Robinson’s political beliefs a protected characteristic under the UK Equality Act. Goozee stated bluntly: “It was actually what you stood for and your beliefs that acted as the principal reason for the stop.”

The judge didn’t stop there. In a scathing rebuke of the authorities, Goozee found:

  • Police testimony was riddled with contradictions and lies.

  • Officers admitted to destroying key notes and evidence.

  • Witnesses for the prosecution were “unreliable” and lacked credibility.

This wasn’t a misunderstanding. This was a coordinated effort to criminalize journalism and suppress dissent and they got caught.

Elon Musk, who has increasingly stepped into the global free speech battle, funded Robinson’s legal defense. Without that support, Robinson says, he’d likely be in prison. “I should be happy, but I’m not,” he said in a post-verdict video. “It shouldn’t take an American billionaire to defend British free speech.”

He’s right. The real story here isn’t just about Robinson’s acquittal it’s about a state apparatus so desperate to crush critics that it now treats investigative reporting as terrorism. Meanwhile, British media outlets sat through the trial and refused to cover the police misconduct, hoping for another activist judge to rubber-stamp the regime’s persecution.

Let’s not forget: this isn’t Robinson’s first brush with political prosecution. Over the years, he’s faced case after case, drained tens of thousands of pounds in legal fees, and endured relentless smears only to be exonerated time and again.

Now, with Musk’s backing, the tide may be turning. Free speech doesn’t just need defense in far-off authoritarian regimes. It needs defending right now, in so-called “democracies” that use anti-terror laws to silence their own citizens.

This verdict exposed what many have long suspected the UK’s justice system has become two-tiered. One for the protected political class. And another for those who dare to expose their failures.

As Robinson put it best. “I was arrested and prosecuted under counterterrorism legislation for being Tommy Robinson.” If they can do it to him, they can do it to anyone.
