RFK Jr. Wins Over Pro-Life Senators With Pledge to Support Trump’s Agenda

GOP lawmakers express confidence in Kennedy’s commitment to reinstating pro-life policies at HHS.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s confirmation hearings in Washington, D.C., have turned heads, especially as he courts support from pro-life Republican senators. Despite his historically controversial views on abortion, Kennedy is winning over GOP lawmakers with promises to uphold former President Donald Trump’s pro-life policies if confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).

  • Firm Pledges on Pro-Life Policies: Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) revealed that Kennedy committed to reinstating Trump’s pro-life measures, including the Mexico City Policy, which blocks federal funds for foreign NGOs that promote abortion, and prohibiting taxpayer funding for abortions domestically.

  • Pro-Life Deputies at HHS: Kennedy also promised that his appointees within the department would share a pro-life stance and that he would restore conscience protections for healthcare providers.

  • GOP Reactions: Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), who grilled Kennedy on his abortion stance, emerged confident, saying, “I believe Bobby is still the right person for this position.” Similarly, Senator James Lankford (R-OK) applauded Kennedy’s willingness to continue Trump’s legacy on pro-life issues, emphasizing the critical role HHS plays in defending unborn life.

Kennedy’s stance on abortion has long been a political minefield. While he has made conflicting statements in the past, recent remarks seem to signal a more consistent position. During the 2024 campaign, Kennedy declared his opposition to late-term abortion and highlighted the need for policies that reduce abortion rates, aligning with mainstream pro-life values.

However, his mixed record has left many conservatives uneasy. In one controversial interview, Kennedy argued that abortion should remain a woman’s decision “even if it is full term.” Such statements have fueled skepticism, even among staunchly pro-life advocates. Yet, in his Senate meetings, Kennedy has distanced himself from these prior remarks, promising to execute Trump’s pro-life agenda as HHS secretary.

The Department of Health and Human Services wields significant influence over abortion policies, including the distribution of federal funds and regulatory oversight. Many pro-lifers, like National Review editor Ramesh Ponnuru, have voiced concerns about Kennedy’s commitment to protecting the unborn, citing his reluctance to address issues like taxpayer-funded abortion and Title X funding restrictions.

Brian Burch, president of Catholic Vote, believes Kennedy’s hesitations stem from his broader philosophy of medical freedom. Burch argues that pro-life advocates must continue engaging Kennedy to ensure he aligns with the moral imperative to protect life.

While RFK Jr. is not without his critics, his recent statements appear to have convinced key Republican senators that he will champion Trump’s pro-life agenda at HHS. If confirmed, Kennedy’s actions will be closely scrutinized by a pro-life movement eager to see tangible results. For now, his assurances have earned him cautious support from GOP lawmakers, signaling a potential path forward for his confirmation.
