Pritzker Slams Texas Maps While Ignoring His Own Partisan Power Grab

Illinois governor’s self-righteous defense of “democracy” rings hollow after his redistricting betrayal.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker just delivered a masterclass in political hypocrisy. While standing shoulder to shoulder with Texas Democrats who fled their state to sabotage Republican-led redistricting efforts, Pritzker claimed, without a hint of irony, that election map manipulation is “not something that I want to do.”

That might be convincing if it weren’t for the fact that he already did it.

Back in 2021, Pritzker presided over one of the most partisan redistricting processes in the country, earning Illinois an “F” rating from Princeton’s Gerrymandering Project for its blatant bias. Under his watch, Democrats contorted district lines to secure their political dominance for another decade, betraying every promise Pritzker made as a candidate.

Here’s what Pritzker said in 2018 “We should amend the constitution to create an independent commission to draw legislative maps.”

He even vowed to veto any partisan map not crafted by an independent commission.

Fast forward to April 2021, and Pritzker suddenly decided it was “too late” for an independent panel and chose instead to trust the very lawmakers who benefit most from partisan redistricting all of them Democrats.

So much for principles.

Let’s break down the facts:

  • In 2021, Pritzker allowed the Democrat-controlled legislature to push through a redistricting map without independent oversight, ensuring maximum benefit for his party.

  • Illinois currently has a Democratic supermajority, which used its unchecked power to consolidate control.

  • Despite earlier promises, Pritzker offered no resistance not even a veto against the map that Republicans widely condemned as a blatant power grab.

U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) didn’t mince words “Governor Pritzker lied to the people of Illinois, plain and simple.”

He’s right. Pritzker campaigned on transparency and fairness, only to toss those ideals aside the moment they threatened his party’s grip on the state. Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers like Tim Butler had real reform proposals ready including legislation to create an independent redistricting commission only to see Democrats block them without debate.

Now, standing on a stage with Texas Democrats who ditched their duties to block a GOP redistricting plan, Pritzker has the nerve to claim he’s fighting for democracy?

This is the same tired strategy we’ve seen from Democrats across the board scream about “voter suppression” in red states while quietly rigging the game in blue ones.

If Pritzker genuinely cared about fair representation, he would have upheld his promise and vetoed his party’s partisan map. Instead, he helped rig the board, then pointed fingers at others for playing the game.

What we’re witnessing is not leadership. It’s calculated dishonesty designed to entrench power and silence opposition. And it’s exactly why voters are losing faith in the so-called defenders of “democracy” who only seem to cherish it when it works in their favor.
