Prince Harry Shuts Down Divorce Rumors Amid Media Speculation
The Duke of Sussex dismisses tabloid gossip and addresses safety concerns for his family.
Prince Harry has finally responded to persistent rumors that his marriage to Meghan Markle is on the rocks. Speaking at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit on Wednesday, the Duke of Sussex dismissed the tabloid speculation as baseless, mocking the media’s fixation on their private lives.
“There’s articles left and right about, you know, ‘Why are you doing independent events? Why aren’t you doing them together?’” asked DealBook founder Andrew Ross Sorkin, referencing recent headlines.
Harry quipped about the absurdity of the claims, saying, “Apparently we’ve bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We’ve apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well. So, it’s just like, what?” He added, “It’s hard to keep up with, but that’s why you just sort of ignore it.”
The prince expressed pity for those who fuel the gossip machine, particularly online trolls. “The people I feel most sorry about are the trolls. Their hopes are just built and built, and it’s like, ‘Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,’ and then it doesn’t happen. So I feel sorry for them. Genuinely, I do,” he said.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been married since 2018 and share two children, Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3. Since stepping down from their roles as working royals in 2020, the couple has faced relentless scrutiny, amplified by their move to California and outspoken critiques of the British royal family.
Despite the media frenzy, Harry made it clear that he prioritizes the safety of his family. Speaking to ITV earlier this year, he cited serious threats as one of the reasons he’s reluctant to bring Meghan back to the U.K. “All it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff to act on what they have read,” he said, describing fears of violence ranging from knife attacks to acid threats.
The prince’s concerns are rooted in his ongoing battle for personal protection in the U.K. After losing his taxpayer-funded police security following their royal departure, Harry has faced legal challenges in his attempt to regain that right.
In July, the London High Court sided with the government’s decision to remove his automatic entitlement to police protection, a move Harry continues to appeal. “The U.K. is my home,” he previously stated. “The U.K. is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home.”
However, he emphasized that this vision for his family’s connection to Britain is impossible without adequate security. “I can’t put my wife in danger like that, and given my experiences in life, I’m reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm’s way too,” he explained.
While Harry and Meghan remain a lightning rod for controversy, the prince’s remarks highlight his growing frustration with the relentless gossip and his unwavering focus on protecting his family. Whether they are attending events together or separately, one thing is clear: Prince Harry is not entertaining tabloid fantasies.
