Streamer Hasan Piker has sued CNN commentator Scott Jennings for defamation, Times Now World reports, and the headlines could not agree on the price. Courthouse News Service put $72 million in its headline. TV Insider put $72.5 million in its. Times Now World wrote over $72 million. By that outlet's account of the court filing, Piker is pursuing at least $27.5 million in compensatory damages alongside $45 million in punitive damages.

The suit follows an August 11 podcast episode in which, Piker alleges, Jennings used a deceptively edited video to claim falsely that the streamer had advocated for violence against Black voters. The lawsuit contends the footage was manipulated to misrepresent comments Piker made during a 2024 livestream, and that it attributed views to him that he never expressed, Times Now World reports.

The outlet describes the segment at the center of the case. Jennings was discussing Piker's association with Democratic politician Abdul El-Sayed, Times Now World reports, and addressed Black voters while criticizing the Democratic Party for its ties to the streamer. Jennings then played a portion of the 2024 livestream and told his audience to listen for themselves, according to the outlet's account of the complaint.

Piker's lawyers say the original footage shows something else. By their account, Piker was mocking a conservative Black commentator who had argued that policies backed by certain district attorneys were hurting Black Americans. The lawsuit says Piker was using sarcasm to imitate that commentator's argument, not expressing support for racial violence or calling for a return to it, Times Now World reports.

As of the filing, Jennings had not given a public response to the allegations, according to Times Now World.

The dollar figure got the headlines. The filing's number starts with the words at least, and the outlets that rounded it up or down each printed a different sum. Whether a trimmed clip changed Piker's meaning is the question a court will now decide.
