Pelosi Discloses Lack of Communication with Biden Since Urging Him to Leave 2024 Race
The former House Speaker reveals tensions remain after urging Biden to step aside for Harris.
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi has revealed that she has not spoken to President Joe Biden since he stepped down from the 2024 presidential race earlier this year, a decision she reportedly played a pivotal role in pushing. During a recent appearance on the “Politics Weekly America” podcast, Pelosi confirmed to journalist Jonathan Freeland that there has been no communication between her and Biden in the months following his withdrawal.
“Not since then, no,” Pelosi said when asked if she had spoken to the president. Despite the silence, Pelosi maintained a diplomatic tone, saying she is "prayerful" about the situation and continues to hold Biden in high regard. "I think his legacy had to be protected,” she added, suggesting that the trajectory of his re-election campaign threatened that legacy.
Biden’s decision to step aside, despite securing the Democratic nomination with over 14 million primary votes, came after mounting concerns from Democratic insiders about his age, mental sharpness, and ability to defeat Donald Trump in a rematch. Reports have surfaced that Pelosi was among the key figures urging Biden to step down, even warning him privately that his continued candidacy could damage Democrats in down-ballot races.
CNN reported that Pelosi directly told Biden that polls showed he was unlikely to win against Trump, further fueling the pressure that led to his eventual exit. Biden, despite initially resisting calls to leave the race, eventually endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who swiftly gained the Democratic nomination in his place.
The abrupt end to Biden’s campaign followed a faltering debate performance against Trump, a moment that seemingly solidified doubts about his electability. While Pelosi publicly claimed she would support any decision Biden made regarding his political future, her calls for a "better course" behind the scenes reportedly galvanized other Democrats to push for his withdrawal.
Rumors have persisted that Biden harbored frustrations with Pelosi and other party members for pressuring him out of the race. However, the president downplayed these tensions during a September interview on ABC’s The View, where he insisted his relationship with Pelosi remained “fine” and expressed confidence that he could have beaten Trump had he stayed in the race.
In her interview with Freeland, Pelosi suggested that while Biden may have felt "unease" about her involvement, it’s possible that members of his inner circle were more unforgiving. "There may be some people around him who haven’t forgiven me for my role," she remarked, though she emphasized the importance of moving forward to ensure a Democratic victory in 2024.
The fallout between Pelosi and Biden reflects the broader fractures within the Democratic Party as they face an increasingly competitive political landscape. With Kamala Harris now leading the ticket, the party is scrambling to unite behind a candidate many see as unelectable, while Trump gains momentum ahead of the 2024 election.
As the race heats up, the silence between Pelosi and Biden underscores the lingering tensions that could further divide a party in disarray.
