NYPD Releases Images of Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO’s Execution-Style Killing
Authorities seek public help as investigation into the brazen, targeted attack intensifies.
The New York Police Department has released new surveillance images showing the face of the suspect in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The chilling execution-style shooting took place Wednesday morning as Thompson was on his way to a Midtown Manhattan hotel for his company’s annual Investor’s Conference.
The suspect, captured on camera wearing a green jacket with a hood, was reportedly staying at a youth hostel in Manhattan before the killing, according to the New York Post. The images provide the first clear look at the suspect’s face, though authorities have yet to identify the individual.
In their pursuit of leads, NYPD officers raided the hostel and another residence in Manhattan believed to be connected to the case, according to local journalist Gus Saltonstall.
The suspect fled the scene on foot before escaping on a bike into Central Park, police reported. The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Detectives recovered shell casings from the scene with ominous words like “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” written on them, suggesting the shooting was a calculated act. Authorities have classified the killing as a “brazen targeted attack” and are also investigating prior death threats Thompson reportedly received.
Video footage of the incident shows the suspect firing at Thompson from behind as the health insurance CEO approached the Hilton Hotel. After Thompson fell, the shooter delivered multiple additional shots before fleeing. Thompson was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Thompson’s death comes amid ongoing criticism of UnitedHealthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest corporations globally. The company has faced backlash over its claims denial practices, raising questions about whether Thompson’s role as CEO made him a target.
As the investigation unfolds, the NYPD is urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of public assistance in identifying and apprehending the suspect.
This shocking act of violence has left New Yorkers and the broader business community reeling, underscoring the vulnerability of even the most high-profile figures.
