$30 Million in Homeland Security Spending Cut by Noem in Three Weeks

The Trump administration says savings prove the era of reckless taxpayer abuse is over.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is wasting no time in cleaning house. In just three weeks, she has slashed more than $30 million in unnecessary government grants and contracts, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed this week.

The cuts totaling $31,692,166 between August 22 and September 12 come as part of President Donald Trump’s broader push to eliminate waste and restore accountability across federal agencies.

“In just three weeks, Secretary Noem has saved the taxpayer more than $30 million. That’s more than $1 million per day,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, it is no longer open season on the American taxpayer at DHS.”

Record Savings Under Trump and Noem

  • Since Trump returned to office, DHS has saved over $12 billion roughly $50 million per day.

  • Every DHS contract worth more than $100,000 now requires Secretary Noem’s approval, ensuring bloated and politically motivated projects don’t slip through.

  • Deportations of illegal aliens, which the department says also generate enormous taxpayer savings, are not even included in the $12 billion total.

The costs of illegal immigration alone highlight the stakes. According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, illegal immigration drains U.S. taxpayers $150.7 billion annually. Taxes paid by illegal immigrants only cover about 17% of the costs they impose, meaning that for every $1 they contribute, they consume $6 in benefits and services.

By cutting waste and enforcing immigration law, the administration argues it is saving taxpayers billions while putting America’s priorities first.

Secretary Noem’s aggressive approach stands in sharp contrast to the Biden years, where DHS wasted resources on diversity consultants, woke training programs, and lax immigration enforcement. Under Trump’s leadership, that era is over.

The administration has made clear it intends to reinvest these savings into stronger border security and immigration enforcement. With billions already saved and wasteful contracts on the chopping block, the message is simple: Washington is finally being forced to live within its means.
