Newsom Moves to Freeze Health Care Enrollment for Illegal Immigrants

After years of throwing taxpayer dollars at illegal immigrants, California Governor Gavin Newsom is finally hitting the brakes. Facing a ballooning deficit and growing outrage over unsustainable spending, Newsom is now proposing to freeze enrollment in the state’s Medi-Cal program for illegal immigrants starting January 1, 2026.

This comes after California proudly became the first state in the nation to offer free health care to all income-eligible illegal immigrants, a reckless move that has now exploded in cost and political fallout.

According to Newsom’s revised 2025–2026 budget proposal, the free health care expansion cost billions more than projected, prompting the governor to halt new applications and introduce a $100 monthly fee for those who remain in the program beginning in 2027.

“Radical left politicians in California prioritize illegal aliens over our own citizens,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. “The gravy train is over.”

The numbers speak for themselves:

• Newsom’s proposed changes are projected to save the state $5.4 billion through 2029.

• California lawmakers just approved a $3.4 billion loan to keep the program afloat at least until June.

• This is the third consecutive year California has had to slash spending after blowing taxpayer money on programs it couldn’t afford.

Let’s be clear: Newsom and his Democrat allies created this mess. They championed sanctuary policies, handed out free health care and cash assistance, and invited waves of illegal immigrants to take full advantage of California’s already-strained system. Now, reality is catching up.

What’s worse? Even as Newsom scrambles to plug the financial hole, he still refuses to accept responsibility. Instead, he blamed you guessed it President Donald Trump’s tariffs, claiming they’re to blame for a projected $16 billion drop in state revenue. That’s a hard sell when you’ve spent years encouraging the flood of illegal immigration and big-government bloat.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is stepping in to clean up the mess. DHS has launched an investigation into California’s illegal immigrant benefits, specifically targeting Los Angeles County’s program that gives cash to elderly illegal aliens who don’t qualify for Social Security. Expect that probe to expand.

“If you are an illegal immigrant, you should leave now,” Noem said. “While this subpoena focuses only on Los Angeles County it is just the beginning.”

This is what happens when ideology collides with economic reality. The Democrats’ open-borders welfare fantasy is collapsing under its own weight, and the people footing the bill American taxpayers are finally starting to wake up.

California isn’t just a cautionary tale. It’s a preview of what the entire country will look like if radical leftists are allowed to keep driving policy from Washington. The good news? President Trump is back, and he’s making it clear The free ride is over.
