Newsom and California Democrats Set Aside $50 Million to Fight Trump While Wildfires Rage
Priorities? As L.A. burns, Democrats focus on protecting illegal immigrants instead of Californians.
As wildfires continue to devastate Los Angeles, leaving destruction in their wake, California Governor Gavin Newsom and state Democrats have decided their top priority isn’t disaster relief it’s fighting Donald Trump.
In a stunning display of misplaced priorities, Newsom and the Democrat-controlled legislature have agreed to set aside $50 million to battle the incoming Trump administration, with half the funds dedicated to shielding illegal immigrants from deportation. The vote could take place as soon as this week just days before Trump is sworn into office.
With entire communities in L.A. County burning, Republicans have demanded an emergency session to address the fires, but Newsom has instead focused on protecting California’s nearly 1.8 million illegal immigrants.
Here’s how the Democrats are choosing to spend taxpayer money:
$25 million for the California Department of Justice to fight Trump’s policies in court.
$25 million to fund legal aid services for illegal immigrants, shielding them from deportation and detention.
Zero dollars in new emergency wildfire funding.
Senate Budget Chair Scott Wiener boasted that the funding will make California a “bulwark against Trump’s extremist agenda” apparently believing that standing against immigration enforcement is more important than standing with fire-ravaged communities.
Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher slammed the move, calling it a “$50 million slush fund” for government lawyers.
“At a time when California should be laser-focused on responding to the devastating wildfires in L.A., Democrat lawmakers’ priority is creating a $50 million slush fund to hire government lawyers for hypothetical fights against the federal government and to defend criminal illegal immigrants from being returned to their home countries,” Gallagher said.
Meanwhile, Newsom brushed off concerns during a friendly interview on the leftist podcast “Pod Save America,” claiming he’s “happy to do whatever moves the needle forward.” Translation: he’ll do whatever pleases his radical base even if it means abandoning Californians in crisis.
With Trump preparing to take office and launch mass deportations, California Democrats are scrambling to keep their illegal immigrant voter base protected. Since the 1980s, California has led the nation in illegal immigration, and Democrats see their political future tied to keeping these individuals in the state no matter the cost to actual taxpayers.
State Sen. Wiener made it clear that illegal immigrants are the priority, not the American citizens suffering from skyrocketing crime, homelessness, and devastating natural disasters.
“Senate Democrats are particularly proud to provide funding for providers of legal aid services, which know our communities’ needs best and are best positioned to defend at scale the millions of individuals and families that will be impacted by the incoming administration’s extreme agenda,” Wiener said.
This move is a slap in the face to every hard-working Californian who pays taxes, plays by the rules, and expects their government to put their needs first. Instead of securing communities, rebuilding after the fires, or addressing the growing lawlessness plaguing California, Newsom and his allies are funneling millions into fighting Trump and protecting lawbreakers.
With President Trump set to take office next week, Americans can expect real leadership leadership that puts citizens first, secures the border, and holds corrupt politicians accountable.
