Elon Musk’s Boring Company To Build Nashville Tunnel Project
The privately funded “Music City Loop” will link Nashville’s airport to downtown in just eight minutes.

Tennessee is set to become home to one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the country as Elon Musk’s Boring Company partners with the state to build an underground transit tunnel connecting Nashville International Airport to the city’s bustling downtown.
Governor Bill Lee announced the project, dubbed the “Music City Loop,” on Monday, praising the innovative partnership as a win for both Tennessee’s economy and its taxpayers.
“This project will be 100% privately funded with no cost to taxpayers,” Lee said during a press conference at the airport. “Tennessee continues to lead the nation in finding innovative solutions to infrastructure challenges. By leveraging the innovation of private sector companies like The Boring Company, we’re exploring possibilities we couldn’t achieve on our own as a state.”
The Music City Loop will cut the commute between the airport and downtown to just eight minutes using electric vehicles traveling through the tunnel. Nashville’s growing congestion, fueled by a booming economy and population surge, has made transportation solutions a top priority.
Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy highlighted how the state’s success has created new infrastructure demands:
“Congestion is the product of your own success,” Duffy said. “People are flocking to Tennessee because of the strong economy, business-friendly environment, and conservative leadership.”
The tunnel will be constructed under state-owned roads and is scheduled to begin in fall 2026, pending final approvals.
Boring Company President Steve Davis noted that while Tennessee’s rock formations present a challenge, the engineering team is confident they can execute the project efficiently.
Tennessee’s Republican leadership, including Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty, celebrated the announcement. Blackburn emphasized that the tunnel will not only improve transportation but also strengthen Nashville’s reputation as a growing hub for technology and innovation.
“As Nashville International Airport continues to set passenger records and our city experiences an economic boom, the Boring Company’s investment in the Music City Loop will help ease growing pains and address transportation challenges at zero cost to Tennessee taxpayers,” Blackburn said.
Elon Musk’s Boring Company has been expanding its tunneling technology in select cities, but choosing Tennessee underscores the state’s growing reputation as a magnet for private-sector innovation. Unlike states weighed down by bureaucracy and failed infrastructure policies, Tennessee is leading with fiscally responsible, forward-thinking solutions that don’t require massive tax hikes.
As construction gears up, the Music City Loop could become a model for other cities looking for bold solutions to modern traffic challenges without burdening residents.
