Milei Scores Landmark Midterm Win, Tightens Grip on Argentine Congress

Fueled by fiscal reform and Trump-backed support, Argentina’s libertarian president gains sweeping momentum for free-market overhaul.

Argentine President Javier Milei delivered a stunning political triumph Sunday, securing a historic midterm victory that tightens his control over Congress and sets the stage for a sweeping expansion of his libertarian, free-market reforms.

Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, pulled off a shock upset in the Buenos Aires province long a Peronist stronghold by winning 41.5% of the vote, edging out the opposition coalition’s 40.8%, according to early counts reported by Reuters and the Associated Press.

Nationally, the libertarian bloc increased its presence in the lower house from 37 to 64 seats, strengthening Milei’s ability to defend executive decrees and block legislative sabotage from opposition parties.

“The result is better than even the most optimistic Milei supporters were hoping for,” said Marcelo Garcia of Horizon Engage.
“With this result, Milei will be able to easily defend his decrees and vetoes in Congress.”

For a country long plagued by chronic inflation, bloated government, and socialist economic mismanagement, Milei’s bold reforms are already paying dividends:

  • Inflation has plummeted from 12.8% to 2.1% in just months

  • His administration posted a fiscal surplus after years of red ink

  • Sweeping deregulation measures are unshackling businesses and markets

  • Investor confidence is surging, with Argentine stocks and bonds expected to rally following Sunday’s result

Political consultant Gustavo Cordoba told Reuters the vote reflected “cautious optimism” and a public increasingly willing to stand behind Milei’s economic agenda. “Many people were willing to give the government another chance,” he said. “The triumph is unobjectionable, unquestionable.”

Adding to the momentum, President Donald Trump who had previously offered strong support for Milei congratulated him personally on Truth Social following the win:

“Congratulations to President Javier Milei on his Landslide Victory in Argentina. He is doing a wonderful job! Our confidence in him was justified by the People of Argentina.”

This comes after Trump’s administration extended a $40 billion support package to Argentina, including a $20 billion currency swap and $20 billion in investment funding, contingent on Milei’s performance in the midterms a bet that has now clearly paid off.

While Joe Biden has offered only tepid acknowledgment of Milei’s rise, Trump has actively supported pro-freedom leaders abroad, standing shoulder to shoulder with Milei as a fellow fighter against globalism, socialism, and economic decay.

Sunday’s election marks what Milei called a “turning point for Argentina”, signaling not just a political victory but a cultural shift in a country long dominated by leftist populism. With increased congressional support and a public hungry for change, Milei now has the political capital to dismantle entrenched bureaucracy, slash government spending, and put Argentina back on a path of real prosperity.

This is the model for bold, unapologetic leadership in the face of decades of socialist decline. Argentina is done waiting and under Milei, it’s finally waking up.
