Mayorkas Fumbles on Biden Admin’s Failure to Stop China’s ‘Salt Typhoon’ Hack

The largest hack in U.S. history exposes weak cybersecurity leadership and Biden’s soft stance on China.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas floundered when pressed on why the Biden administration has been unable to stop the ongoing “Salt Typhoon” hack by China, which has breached U.S. telecommunication companies and potentially impacted millions of Americans.

The “Salt Typhoon” hack, believed to be one of the largest in U.S. history, has exposed critical vulnerabilities in America’s cybersecurity infrastructure. Despite the scale and severity of the attack, the Biden administration’s response has been lackluster. Mayorkas’ attempt to address the issue on CBS News’ Face the Nation on Sunday only deepened concerns.

When asked directly why the U.S. government hasn’t stopped the breach, Mayorkas offered vague platitudes. “The intrusion is a very significant one and an extraordinarily impactful one and an absolutely unacceptable one,” he said, before pointing to President Biden’s so-called “strong response.”

Mayorkas claimed that the administration responded through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s actions against China Telecom. However, he failed to explain how this measure addresses the ongoing breach or prevents future attacks. Instead, he repeatedly referred to the hack as “sophisticated” and praised the telecommunications companies for “working very vigorously to remediate it.”

This “response” does little to reassure Americans that the administration has a handle on the situation. As Mayorkas himself admitted, the hack is an “ongoing situation” with no clear resolution in sight.

This incident is yet another example of the Biden administration’s inability or unwillingness to confront China’s growing cyber threat.

  • China’s relentless cyberattacks have targeted everything from government agencies to private companies, costing the U.S. billions annually.

  • Despite the damage, the administration continues to offer weak, reactive measures rather than implementing proactive solutions.

  • Cybersecurity experts warn that allowing China to get away with such blatant attacks only emboldens them to escalate their efforts.

Mayorkas’ inability to articulate a clear strategy underscores the administration’s larger failure to protect American infrastructure from foreign adversaries. This lack of leadership places millions of Americans at risk and leaves critical industries vulnerable to further attacks.

As China continues to exploit U.S. weaknesses, it’s clear that strong, decisive leadership is needed to combat this threat. The Biden administration’s failure to act decisively against “Salt Typhoon” is a glaring reminder of their inability to prioritize national security in the face of growing global dangers.
