Homeland Security’s Mayorkas Dismisses Concerns Over Drone Sightings
Homeland Security Chief Downplays Concerns Amid Rising Drone Sightings.
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the embattled Biden official impeached for his catastrophic mishandling of the border crisis, is now reassuring Americans about a new concern: mysterious drone sightings over the East Coast. His remarks come as public anxiety grows over reports of unidentified drones flying at night, particularly in New Jersey.
In an interview Sunday on ABC News’ “This Week,” Mayorkas attempted to downplay the concerns, stating, “There’s no question that people are seeing drones. And I want to assure the American public that we, in the federal government, have deployed additional resources, personnel, [and] technology to assist the New Jersey State Police in addressing the drone sightings.”
While admitting that the sightings are real, Mayorkas claimed the issue isn’t as alarming as it appears. “Some of those drone sightings are, in fact, drones,” he said, explaining that others might be manned aircraft mistaken for drones or duplicative reports. However, he conceded, “there’s no question that drones are being sighted.”
Mayorkas suggested that the uptick in sightings stems from changes made by the Federal Aviation Administration late last year that permit drones to fly at night. But critics argue that this explanation falls flat, especially as drone technology has been exploited in recent years for both domestic and foreign criminal activities.
Despite dismissing the immediate threat, Mayorkas acknowledged gaps in current law enforcement capabilities, urging Congress to expand their ability to “incapacitate those drones.” “We are limited in our authorities,” he stated, adding that additional measures are necessary to counter potentially dangerous drone activity effectively.
Mayorkas attempted to quell fears by asserting that the Biden administration has “seen no foreign involvement with respect to the sightings in the northeast.” But given the administration’s lack of transparency on national security issues ranging from the border crisis to Chinese espionage balloons earlier this year skepticism is warranted.
He assured viewers that if any evidence of foreign or criminal involvement emerges, the government would notify the public. Yet, the American people have heard similar promises before, only to be left in the dark when the truth finally came to light.
While Mayorkas claims there’s no reason for concern, his track record inspires little confidence. This is the same official who oversaw the Biden administration’s open-border policies that allowed millions of illegal immigrants, including potential threats, to pour into the country. Now he’s asking Americans to trust him again this time on aerial surveillance in U.S. airspace.
The real question is: How long will it take for this administration to react if these sightings turn out to be something far more sinister?
It’s clear that drone technology poses an increasing challenge to national security, yet the Biden administration’s half-measures leave Americans wondering if they are truly safe.
