Katherine Short, Daughter of Martin Short, Passes Away at 42

The beloved comedian’s family asks for privacy as tributes pour in following the tragic loss.

The family of actor Martin Short confirmed Tuesday that his daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, has died at the age of 42.

“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the family said in a statement. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

Unlike her famous father, Katherine lived a life mostly away from Hollywood.

She was a licensed social worker who worked at UCLA’s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and was involved in community outreach efforts. Friends and colleagues have described her as dedicated to helping vulnerable populations and committed to mental health advocacy.

Katherine was adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, during their 30-year marriage. Dolman died from ovarian cancer in 2010. The couple also adopted two other children.

Though not active in entertainment, Katherine occasionally appeared alongside her father at public events over the years.

According to reports, first responders were dispatched Monday evening to a Hollywood Hills residence following a call regarding a possible suicide. Media outlets have reported that Katherine died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The family has not publicly addressed the specific circumstances beyond confirming her passing.

Suicide remains a leading cause of death in the United States. According to the CDC, more than 49,000 Americans died by suicide in 2023, the highest number ever recorded. Mental health professionals emphasize the importance of early intervention, community support, and accessible treatment.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. In the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day.

Martin Short, 75, has been a staple of comedy for decades. He rose to prominence through sketch comedy on “Second City Television” and “Saturday Night Live” before becoming a household name in films like “Father of the Bride.”

In recent years, he has co-starred alongside Steve Martin and Selena Gomez in the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building,” earning multiple award nominations for his performance.

Short recently paid tribute to longtime friend and collaborator Catherine O’Hara during a live performance, praising her kindness and brilliance.

As of Tuesday, it was unclear whether upcoming dates for Short’s touring comedy show with Steve Martin would be postponed.

The Short family has requested privacy as they navigate what they described as an “impossible time.”
