Margaret Brennan’s Absurd Claim That Free Speech Caused The Holocaust

CBS host pushes dangerous revisionism in desperate attack on conservatives.

CBS News host Margaret Brennan is making headlines for all the wrong reasons after claiming that free speech was “weaponized” to cause the Holocaust. Yes, you read that right according to a mainstream media personality, the real danger to democracy isn’t authoritarianism but free speech itself.

During an interview with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Brennan made the outrageous statement while discussing Vice President JD Vance’s recent speech in Europe, where he criticized European leaders for their abandonment of core values like free expression. Instead of addressing Vance’s points, Brennan bizarrely linked free speech to Nazi genocide.

Let’s break down this absurdity:

  • The Nazi regime was one of the most speech-restrictive governments in modern history. Hitler’s rise to power was marked by book burnings, silencing of political opposition, and propaganda controlled by the state. There was no “weaponized free speech.” There was only controlled, state-mandated ideology.

  • Rubio immediately set the record straight. “Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide,” he corrected. “The genocide was conducted by an authoritarian Nazi regime.” Facts matter. Nazi Germany did not allow dissenting voices it crushed them.

  • Brennan’s statement plays into a dangerous narrative. The left has been working overtime to justify censorship under the guise of "stopping hate speech." If free speech can be blamed for the Holocaust, then restricting speech becomes a moral obligation. See how that works?

This wasn’t just a mistake. It was a calculated attempt to frame free speech as a danger one that conveniently aligns with the left’s ongoing war on open debate. The goal is clear: if conservatives can be painted as extremists for defending free speech, then censorship becomes justifiable.

If free speech is so dangerous, why is it that authoritarian regimes Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, Communist China have all sought to eliminate it? The real danger isn’t free expression. It’s the people who want to control it.
