Mamdani Inherits NYC Mayor X Account Filled With Pro-Israel Posts

New socialist mayor takes control of official account without deleting predecessor’s messaging, sparking ideological confusion.

In a twist that has exposed both the dysfunction and irony of New York City’s leadership transition, newly sworn-in Mayor Zohran Mamdani now controls the official @NYCMayor X (formerly Twitter) account complete with all of former Mayor Eric Adams’s pro-Israel posts still intact. The result? A digital mess that places anti-Israel socialist Mamdani as the apparent author of posts praising the Jewish state.

The account’s updated name, photo, and bio now reflect Mamdani. But the content still includes messages authored by Adams many expressing support for Israel and condemning antisemitism, values that Mamdani, a staunch critic of Israel and advocate of the BDS movement, has long rejected.

This bizarre mismatch is a direct result of New York City's outdated digital policies, which treat the @NYCMayor account as an ongoing institutional platform rather than one tied to an individual officeholder. Unlike the federal government which archives presidential posts under handles like @POTUS44 for Obama or @POTUS45 for Trump New York simply hands the next mayor the keys to the same social media stream, no matter how stark the ideological reversal.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The @NYCMayor account was launched in 2009 and now contains thousands of posts from multiple mayors.

  • The City of New York controls the account, not the individual mayor, and does not archive or reset its content between administrations.

  • As a result, pro-Israel tweets from Adams now appear under Mamdani’s name, creating confusion for followers and an unintentional clash with his deeply anti-Israel views.

The hypocrisy hasn’t gone unnoticed. While Mamdani’s own rhetoric paints Israel as an "apartheid regime," his official X account now showcases posts celebrating U.S.-Israel relations, condemning Hamas attacks, and supporting New York’s Jewish community. Whether he will attempt to scrub the feed or simply ignore the contradiction remains to be seen.

This isn’t just a digital hiccup it’s a vivid reminder of what happens when radical ideologues take power without the systems in place to manage the fallout. Mamdani now sits atop a megaphone built by predecessors who stood for the very values he opposes. And thanks to the city’s refusal to modernize its digital transitions, his first public statements as mayor appear to support the very nation he has vilified.

One can’t help but wonder how long this unintentional truth-telling will last before the posts start mysteriously disappearing.
