Mamdani Doubles Down on Abolishing ICE After Marble Hill Shooting

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is doubling down on his call to abolish ICE, ABC7 New York reports, days after federal agents opened fire on a man with a five-year-old child in his car in Marble Hill. The Washington Examiner reports Mamdani, speaking on MS Now, likened the plainclothes officer who fired to a mass shooter. He also said the agency treats the law as a suggestion, the Examiner reports.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said Sunday the agency will release body camera video of the shooting. ABC7 reports the 28-year-old man was shot Thursday afternoon during an ICE operation while he was reportedly trying to flee, and that anger grew once it became known his five-year-old son was in the back seat. The man suffered a minor neck injury and the child was not hurt, ABC7 reports.

Mullin's account, as reported by ABC7, is that the man had fled from officers once before, about a month ago, and knew he was wanted. Mullin said the man hit the vehicle in front of him, then accelerated toward officers and into another vehicle before shots were fired. He also said the man has a long criminal record and a gang affiliation, and asked why anyone would put a child in that situation.

Mamdani said Sunday he tried to get the man released from federal custody but did not succeed, ABC7 reports. The mayor said ICE is tearing families apart and endangering a five-year-old child and nearby New Yorkers, and that the agency then blames the person and the city instead of examining its own actions.
