Macron Blames Russia for Viral Video of First Lady Shoving His Face

French president lashes out at Kremlin as humiliating footage fuels global speculation about his troubled marriage.

French President Emmanuel Macron is once again pointing fingers this time at “the Russians” after a viral video showed his wife, Brigitte Macron, shoving her fingernails into his face in what many interpreted as a very public marital spat.

The awkward scene unfolded just after the couple landed in Vietnam for what was supposed to be a high-profile diplomatic visit. Instead, the footage, shot by the Associated Press, captured the First Lady sharply redirecting the president’s head toward the plane exit with what looked more like frustration than affection. Macron, caught off guard, composed himself and gave an awkward wave before descending the stairs with his wife.

The internet exploded, with commentators across the globe speculating about the state of the Macrons’ unusual marriage. But instead of addressing the obvious tension, Macron opted for his now-familiar strategy: blame Russia.

Calling the video frenzy a “planetary catastrophe,” Macron claimed the clip was being weaponized by “the Russians,” who, he said, are targeting France’s image on the world stage. “We must remain vigilant against manipulation,” the Elysee declared, doubling down on claims that Kremlin disinformation is behind the viral moment.

This isn’t the first time Macron has tried to blame Moscow for his personal and political missteps:

  • Just weeks ago, Russian officials mocked a rumor that Macron was using cocaine during a trip to Kyiv with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

  • Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova sarcastically asked if the “hand of the Kremlin” was also behind Brigitte’s slap.

The footage struck a nerve for more than one reason. Macron’s marriage to Brigitte, 25 years his senior, has long attracted scrutiny in France and abroad. The relationship has fueled endless speculation, including conspiracy theories that the First Lady is transgender a rumor she’s aggressively fought in court and won damages over.

Still, the optics of a frazzled president being publicly manhandled by his wife don’t exactly inspire confidence in a leader who already comes off as aloof and fragile.

More broadly, the face-shove incident fits into a larger pattern of Macron deflecting criticism by accusing his political enemies both domestic and foreign of “disinformation.” Whether it’s farmers protesting green mandates, French voters rejecting globalist policies, or now, a simple viral video, Macron’s playbook is always the same: deny, deflect, and blame Russia.

But no amount of Kremlin finger-pointing can erase what’s on tape.

In the age of social media, leaders are under more scrutiny than ever and Macron’s inability to control the narrative only highlights how unprepared he is for real, unfiltered global attention. When your biggest international headline is your wife slapping you around on the tarmac, maybe it’s time to take responsibility instead of running for cover behind Cold War talking points.
