Kamala Harris Eyes California Governorship or 2028 Presidential Run
Following her defeat to Trump, Harris explores future political ambitions while Democratic rivals prepare for 2026.
After her decisive loss to President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris is signaling she’s far from done with politics. According to a recent report from POLITICO, Harris has been privately telling advisors to “keep her options open,” including a potential run for governor of California in 2026 or another White House bid in 2028.
“I am staying in the fight,” Harris reportedly said during recent phone calls, emphasizing her intent to remain a prominent figure in the Democratic Party.
Harris’s loss came after she replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee earlier this year. Biden dropped out following a disastrous debate performance against Trump, leaving Harris to face an uphill battle. Despite significant Democratic support, Trump’s ability to win battleground states and make gains with minority groups, young voters, and the working class led to a commanding victory.
Following her defeat, Harris took a brief vacation in Hawaii but is now set to return to Washington, D.C., to evaluate her future. Insiders report that she plans to use the holiday season to explore potential paths forward with family and advisors.
One former Harris campaign aide hinted that her next move may involve setting up a political entity to maintain relationships and keep her options viable.
Harris is reportedly eyeing California’s 2026 gubernatorial race as a possible stepping stone. The race will be wide open, with Governor Gavin Newsom term-limited and expected to pursue his own presidential aspirations in 2028.
Several candidates, including Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, are already positioning themselves for the race. However, early polling suggests Harris could have an edge, given her name recognition and ties to the state where she served as Attorney General and U.S. Senator.
Interestingly, GOP figure Caitlyn Jenner hinted at another run for governor, specifically targeting Harris. “If I ran [for governor], and it was ultimately against Harris, I would destroy her,” Jenner declared on X, injecting early drama into a potential contest.
While a gubernatorial run seems more imminent, Harris is also keeping an eye on the 2028 presidential race. Her defeat in 2024 has done little to dissuade her ambition, and her team is expected to gauge her political capital in the coming months.
The path ahead for Harris is far from certain, especially with a divided Democratic Party and rising stars like Gavin Newsom and Pete Buttigieg also rumored to be eyeing the presidency. For now, Harris remains in the public spotlight, determined to shape her political legacy.
