James Van Der Beek Opens Up About Cancer Battle and the Power of Family
The actor shares his journey of hope, gratitude, and the unwavering support of his wife.
Actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his role on “Dawson’s Creek,” recently opened up about his battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer, sharing how the diagnosis has reshaped his outlook on life and deepened his appreciation for his family. Speaking on “Good Morning America,” the 47-year-old shared emotional insights about his journey since the diagnosis in August 2023, offering a raw and inspiring message of resilience and love.
Van Der Beek described his initial reaction as one of disbelief. “I was honestly in shock,” he said. “It felt like a nightmare … a reality that all of that [my plans] was going to change.” But despite the initial fear, he has found reasons for gratitude.
Key Highlights from His Journey:
Facing the Diagnosis: Van Der Beek said the diagnosis forced him to reevaluate his priorities. “As soon as I got diagnosed, I knew this is going to add many happy years to my life,” he shared. “I’m going to make changes that I never would have made otherwise.”
Embracing Vulnerability: The actor admitted that his battle has been emotionally challenging, saying, “About 10% of the time I was a sobbing, terrified mess,” but emphasized his focus on the future.
Family Support: He credited his wife, Kimberley, for being his anchor throughout the ordeal. “She’s really taught me what unconditional love is,” he said, choking up as he described how she’s stood by him.
The actor also reflected on the support network of friends and family who have shown up for him during this difficult time. Learning to ask for help, he said, has been a humbling yet beautiful experience.
Earlier this year, Van Der Beek revealed that the couple’s decision to move their family of eight from Los Angeles to Texas was one of the best choices they’ve made. He noted the benefits for their six children Olivia, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, Joshua, and Jeremiah highlighting how they’ve connected with nature and gained an education beyond what a traditional classroom could offer.
The actor remains optimistic about his recovery, finding strength in faith, family, and the power of gratitude. His story reminds us of the importance of cherishing life’s blessings, even amid adversity.
