Israel and U.S. Collaborate on Advanced Anti-Drone Technology

Joint efforts aim to counter evolving unmanned aerial threats from Iran and its proxies.

Israel's Defense Ministry is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Defense's Irregular Warfare Technical Support Directorate to develop cutting-edge anti-drone technologies. This partnership addresses the escalating threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly those deployed by Iran and its allied militant groups.

Recent incidents underscore the urgency of this initiative. In January 2024, a drone attack at a U.S. outpost in Jordan resulted in the tragic loss of three American soldiers and injuries to over 30 service members. Officials attributed the attack to Iran-backed militants, with the drone reportedly originating from Syria.

To counter such threats, Israel has conducted a series of tests involving nine domestic defense contractors and startups. These companies showcased approximately 20 innovative technologies designed to detect, intercept, and neutralize hostile drones. The demonstrated solutions included:

  • Advanced Drone-Based Interception Systems: Developed by Xtend in collaboration with Axioma and Elbit Systems, these systems enhance precision in targeting enemy UAVs.

  • Projectile Interception Technologies: General Robotics presented solutions for medium-range threats, including an innovative machine gun-based system.

  • Precision Guidance Systems: SMARTSHOOTER introduced unique developments that enable accurate targeting across various interception methods.

Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized the evolving nature of UAV threats, highlighting their expansion across all combat sectors, primarily driven by Iran and its proxies. He stated, "This threat has already extracted a heavy human toll from us, which is why we have mobilized all tools to develop an effective response."

The collaboration between Israel and the U.S. reflects a shared commitment to addressing the challenges posed by modern warfare. By leveraging technological innovation and strategic partnerships, both nations aim to enhance their defensive capabilities against the growing menace of drone attacks.
