Israel Resumes Heavy Airstrikes on Hamas After Ceasefire Collapse

Netanyahu orders renewed offensive as Hamas rejects hostage deal, IDF strikes widen to Syria and Lebanon.

Israel has resumed extensive airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza, marking the most significant military action since the ceasefire began on January 17. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched the renewed offensive Monday night after Hamas repeatedly rejected proposals to extend the ceasefire and refused to release Israeli hostages.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz made their position clear, issuing a direct statement "The IDF is, at this time, attacking targets of the Hamas terrorist organization throughout the Gaza Strip in order to achieve the objectives of the war... including the release of all of our hostages, the living and the deceased. Israel will, from now on, act against Hamas with increasing military strength."

Key developments:

  • Extensive airstrikes across Gaza target Hamas command centers and infrastructure.

  • Israeli civilians near Gaza placed under heightened defensive measures, suspending educational activities.

  • IDF also conducted strikes in Syria, targeting Assad regime military sites and Hezbollah assets in southern Lebanon.

Earlier Monday, IDF forces neutralized two terrorists attempting to plant explosives near Israeli troops in central Gaza. The situation escalated further as Israel expanded its offensive to counter threats from Syria and Lebanon. The IDF stated "The presence of military assets in southern Syria poses a threat to the State of Israel. The IDF will not allow the presence of military threats in southern Syria and will operate against it."

This decisive action follows Hamas’s outright rejection of U.S. Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff’s proposals to prolong the ceasefire and secure the release of Israeli hostages. Despite efforts from international mediators, Hamas made its priorities clear: continued violence over peace.

While Israel acts to protect its citizens and free its hostages, Hamas’s refusal to negotiate reveals the terrorist group’s ongoing commitment to conflict rather than resolution.
