Iranian Hackers Breach Trump Campaign, Share Stolen Materials with Biden-Harris
Federal Agencies Reveal Iranian Interference in 2020 Election Targeting Trump.
In a stunning revelation, federal officials have confirmed that Iranian hackers infiltrated former President Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign and provided stolen materials to the Biden-Harris campaign. The joint statement, released by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), indicates that Iranian cyber operatives were actively working to undermine Trump’s re-election effort.
According to the statement, the hackers sent non-public, stolen materials to the Biden-Harris campaign in June and July of 2020. “The information contained an excerpt taken from stolen, non-public material from former President Trump’s campaign,” the federal agencies noted. The content of the emails reportedly included sensitive details from the Trump campaign.
The Trump campaign responded swiftly. Karoline Leavitt, Trump Campaign National Press Secretary, said, “This is further proof the Iranians are actively interfering in the election to help Kamala Harris and Joe Biden because they know President Trump will restore his tough sanctions and stand against their reign of terror.” Leavitt demanded answers from the Biden-Harris campaign, urging them to disclose what they knew about the hacked materials.
Federal officials, however, stated that there was “currently no information indicating” that Biden or Harris campaign officials responded to the emails containing the stolen information. Still, the implications of a foreign government like Iran intervening on behalf of Trump’s opponents raise serious questions about the integrity of the 2020 election process.
Iran’s motivation in targeting Trump’s campaign is clear. Throughout his presidency, Trump enacted severe sanctions against the regime, crippling their economy and deterring their influence in the Middle East. The Iranian government had every reason to sabotage Trump’s re-election, fearing a second term would bring more of the same. In contrast, they viewed a Biden-Harris victory as an opportunity to ease sanctions and return to the Obama-era policies that allowed Iran greater leverage on the international stage.
Despite the attempt to distance themselves from Biden’s camp, the Harris campaign was deeply entangled in the 2020 election interference narrative. As Harris took over Biden's campaign following his mid-July dropout after the presidential debate, many of his key personnel continued working with her. While Harris' team claimed they were “among the intended victims of this foreign influence operation,” the connection to Biden's former staff raises suspicions.
This isn’t the first instance of Iran meddling in the 2020 election to hurt Trump. National security officials have been warning for months that Iran’s cyber activities were specifically designed to damage the Trump campaign. There were also reports of Iran attempting to leak hacked Trump campaign data to news organizations. Iranian operatives have even been linked to assassination plots against Trump, highlighting the regime’s determination to thwart his leadership.
With just weeks before the 2024 election, these revelations remind Americans of the serious threats posed by foreign interference and the ongoing battle to protect the integrity of U.S. elections. The question remains whether those who benefited from Iran’s interference will be held accountable.
