Ilhan Omar Claims Somalis Are Victims in Billion Dollar Welfare Fraud Scandal

As details continue to emerge about the largest welfare fraud scheme in U.S. history, Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar is doing what she does best deflecting, dodging, and playing the victim.

When asked on CBS’s Face the Nation about how such a massive, billion-dollar fraud ring unfolded in her home state of Minnesota, Omar didn’t express outrage on behalf of the American taxpayer. Instead, she insisted that Somali Americans the very community at the center of the scheme are also victims.

“We also could have benefited from the program and the money that was stolen,” Omar said, seemingly more concerned about missed opportunities than stolen funds. “So it’s been really frustrating for people to not acknowledge the fact that we’re also, as Minnesotans, as taxpayers, really upset and angry about the fraud.”

But this isn’t just about “being upset.” This is about billions of taxpayer dollars stolen with some reportedly funneled to the Somalia-based terrorist group al-Shabaab. According to City Journal, the fraud ballooned under Democrat Governor Tim Walz’s administration, with weak oversight and politically motivated blind spots enabling it to thrive for years.

Omar didn’t stop at deflection. She pivoted to claiming that Trump supporters may turn violent over the fraud revelations, citing past threats she says she’s received.

“There is fear for Somalis, not just in Minnesota, but across the country,” she told CNN, implying criticism of the fraud could lead to attacks. In reality, Americans aren’t threatening Somali communities they’re demanding accountability from corrupt politicians and state bureaucrats.

Omar, of course, is no bystander to the scandal:

• She introduced the 2020 MEALS Act, which is now linked to $250 million in stolen funds.

• She attended events and parties at restaurants owned by fraudsters already convicted of stealing millions.

• One of her own staffers was convicted of fraud.

• She continues to downplay or redirect blame, asking how this all happened “without alarms going off” a stunning question from someone who’s been in the middle of it for years.

Meanwhile, Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller has called this scandal “the single greatest theft of taxpayer dollars through welfare fraud in American history.” He says federal investigations are just scratching the surface.

“We believe the state government is fully complicit in this scheme,” Miller said on Fox News. “We believe that what we are going to uncover is going to shock the American people.”

And it already is. Just a few highlights from the fraud include:

• Fake autism diagnoses used to funnel benefits.

• Phantom food programs that never served a single meal.

• Bogus daycare operations created to drain taxpayer funds.

Yet instead of demanding justice, Rep. Omar is attempting to turn the spotlight onto her critics a familiar tactic from a politician more focused on identity politics than criminal accountability.

If this had happened under Republican leadership, it would dominate headlines for months. But because it involves Democrat officials, a progressive darling in Omar, and a protected immigrant community, most of the media is silent or worse, complicit.

Let’s be crystal clear: the real victims here are American taxpayers who work hard, follow the law, and watch their dollars vanish into a web of corruption, all while being told to stay silent or risk being labeled “racist.”
