House Republicans Push To Censure Al Green Over Trump Speech Disruption
The Texas Democrat was removed from the House chamber after repeated outbursts.

House Republicans are taking action to hold Rep. Al Green (D-TX) accountable after his outburst during President Donald Trump’s address to Congress. Green repeatedly interrupted Trump’s speech, leading to his removal from the House chamber by the Sergeant at Arms. Now, GOP lawmakers are moving to formally censure him for his blatant disregard for decorum.
Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) announced on Wednesday that he intends to bring forward a censure resolution, which must be addressed within two legislative days. A simple majority vote would be enough to pass the measure, which would force Green to stand before the House chamber and receive the formal reprimand.
Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) also introduced a censure resolution, calling Green’s behavior “shameful and inexcusable.” Nehls emphasized that Green’s actions embarrassed not just himself but the state of Texas.
Green’s outburst occurred early in Trump’s speech when he stood and yelled, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!” despite the fact that Trump has never proposed cutting the program. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) immediately called for order, warning Green and others to respect the chamber’s rules. But Green refused to comply, forcing Johnson to have him physically removed.
Outside the chamber, Green doubled down, saying he was “willing to suffer whatever punishment” to make a political statement. His antics are hardly surprising, given his long history of trying to impeach Trump on flimsy charges. Green has filed multiple impeachment articles against Trump, none of which have gained traction.
While Democrats have spent years weaponizing the House to attack Republicans including their sham impeachments of Trump they are quick to defend their own when they break the rules. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said he would be “having a conversation” with Green, but there’s little doubt that Democrats will rally behind him.
Historically, only 27 members of the House have been censured, making it a rare but necessary measure when members completely disregard the integrity of the institution. The last censure was against former Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) after he falsely pulled a fire alarm to delay a vote.
Green’s conduct is just another example of how radical Democrats prioritize political stunts over governing. It’s time for accountability.
