House Republicans Push $1,000 Entry Fee for Asylum Seekers

New GOP proposal aims to fund border security and deter fraudulent claims with historic new asylum fees.

In a bold new move to crack down on the exploitation of America’s broken asylum system, House Republicans have unveiled a proposal that would charge asylum seekers a $1,000 fee to apply for entry into the United States. The measure, tucked into a 116-page bill released by the House Judiciary Committee, is part of a broader effort to implement President Donald Trump’s America First immigration agenda.

If passed, this would mark the first time in U.S. history that migrants would be required to pay a fee to request asylum a necessary step in restoring order to a process that has become little more than a backdoor for illegal immigration.

Supporters of the proposal argue it will:

  • Curtail fraudulent claims by deterring economic migrants posing as asylum seekers.

  • Accelerate processing for those with legitimate, verifiable asylum needs.

  • Generate revenue to boost immigration enforcement and border security infrastructure.

Those applying to bring children would face a $3,500 fee, while individuals already granted asylum would be charged $550 to apply for work authorization. While the left predictably screams about “inhumanity,” the reality is that America’s immigration courts are overwhelmed, and the current system incentivizes illegal entry with zero accountability.

This isn’t about cruelty it’s about control. When nearly 6 million illegal crossings have occurred since Joe Biden took office, according to CBP data, and asylum claims have quadrupled, it’s clear the Democrats’ open border agenda is collapsing under its own weight. Americans are footing the bill for the chaos while cartels profit and communities suffer.

House Republicans are also tying the revenue to real solutions like constructing immigration detention centers, hiring more ICE personnel, and improving judicial processing for immigration cases. Their proposed immigration budget includes:

  • $45 billion for new detention facilities

  • $8 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) staffing

And this comes on the heels of President Trump’s February rollout of the “Trump Gold Card” a $5 million fast-track citizenship plan for high-value investors. That policy, aimed at attracting wealthy immigrants who contribute to America’s economy, stands in stark contrast to the flood of low-skill, unvetted entrants the Biden administration welcomes with open arms.

The left’s solution to a crisis they created is to do nothing while taxpayer resources burn. Republicans, by contrast, are offering a path forward one that’s lawful, fair, and puts Americans first.
