House Republican leaders are pressing the Senate to pass the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill to make daylight saving time permanent, Fox News reports. The push follows a call from President Trump for Congress to act.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise told Fox News Digital there is no reason Americans should lose an hour of sunlight at the end of the day. He said more daylight means more time with families, more business activity and safer communities. Scalise said President Trump has been pushing the change and House Republicans delivered by passing the bill overwhelmingly, calling it a commonsense change the Senate should take up.
The House passed the bill in July by a bipartisan 308 to 117 vote, Fox reports. On Friday, President Trump posted on Truth Social that changing clocks twice a year costs the country a fortune and is bad for crime, stress, sports and much else. The bill has stalled in the Senate, where Majority Leader John Thune told Politico there was no clear path forward, according to Fox.
On Saturday, President Trump posted that almost everyone wants the bill to pass except Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, and he shared the senator's cell phone number while urging Arkansans to contact him, Fox reports. Cotton replied on X that no one likes changing the clock, but Congress has enacted permanent daylight saving time before and repealed it each time after Americans faced very late winter sunrises. He said Arkansans do not want their kids going to school in the dark.
Fox notes the Nixon administration ran a 16-month trial of year-round daylight saving time, and public frustration ended it six months early. For now this is pressure on the Senate, not a change to the clocks.
