New Legislation Passed by House Requires Voter Citizenship Verification

GOP-Led Effort Aims to Secure Election Integrity Amid Ongoing Immigration Concerns.

In a decisive move to bolster election security, the House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act on Wednesday, mandating proof of citizenship for voters in federal elections and imposing stringent voter roll purge requirements on states. The bill passed with a 221-198 vote, gaining support from five Democrats alongside the Republican majority.

Key Points:

  • Election Integrity at Stake: The SAVE Act, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), addresses growing concerns about non-citizen voting. "We’ve got repeated evidence of those who are here illegally — or, or whether they’re here legally — but non-citizens voting," Roy stated.

  • Safeguarding Voting Rights: House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) emphasized the bill’s importance, stating, "Noncitizen voting is a threat to election integrity."

  • Support from GOP Representatives: Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) criticized the Biden Administration for its lax immigration policies, asserting that illegal immigrants should never have the opportunity to vote. Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX) echoed this sentiment, highlighting the unconstitutionality and dangers of allowing non-citizens to vote.

Public Support for the Bill:

A 2022 YouGov survey revealed that 65 percent of Americans support requiring proof of citizenship to vote. This includes a significant portion of Democrats (48 percent), swing voters (62 percent), and a vast majority of Republicans (88 percent).

Next Steps:

The bill now heads to the Senate, where Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) will advocate for its passage. Lee urged Senate Democrats to support the legislation or justify their stance on non-citizen voting, stating, "Now, Senate Democrats need to join us to pass the SAVE Act, or explain why they think non-Americans should be able to vote in American elections."

Ensuring the sanctity of American elections is paramount, and the SAVE Act represents a critical step in preserving the rights and voices of American citizens.
