Harris Calls Certifying Her Loss to Trump a ‘Sacred Obligation’
Vice President calls it a "sacred obligation" as Trump’s victory is officially confirmed.
Vice President Kamala Harris will preside over a joint session of Congress on Monday, where lawmakers will certify President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election. Harris, who was soundly defeated in November, described the process as a “sacred obligation” and vowed to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.
Harris becomes only the third vice president in modern history to oversee the certification of their own electoral defeat, following Al Gore in 2001 and Richard Nixon in 1961. Despite her administration’s failed bid for reelection, Harris stated she would uphold her constitutional duty with “love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and unwavering faith in the American people.”
In a pre-recorded video, Harris invoked the events of January 6, 2021, claiming “our democracy can be fragile” and warning that Americans must “stand up for our most cherished principles.”
President Joe Biden, who declined to run for a second term, also referenced January 6, urging Democrats in Congress to “tell the truth” about what happened. “I won’t let January 6th be rewritten or even erased,” he declared.
Unlike four years ago, when Democrats spent months contesting the legitimacy of Trump’s presidency and weaponizing claims about January 6, Harris and Biden are now attempting to frame themselves as guardians of democracy.
Trump’s victory marks a decisive rejection of Biden’s policies, with voters across the country overwhelmingly backing Trump’s return to the White House. Despite their rhetoric, Harris and Biden are presiding over a clear and indisputable election outcome one that millions of Americans are eager to see restored.
