Graham Introduces Bill to Sanction Attacks on Kurds

As Biden sleeps on the crisis, America's most loyal allies face annihilation in Syria.

Senator Lindsey Graham is taking decisive action where the Biden administration refuses to lift a finger. As violence escalates across northern Syria, Graham has introduced the Save the Kurds Act a hard-hitting sanctions package aimed at punishing any government or group targeting Kurdish populations.

For those who’ve forgotten, the Kurds were the backbone of America’s victory against ISIS. They didn’t just support our efforts they were the effort. From 2014 to 2019, Kurdish fighters in Syria and Iraq risked everything to stop one of the most barbaric terror regimes in history.

And now? Thanks to a feckless White House that’s too busy mismanaging our own borders to care about the global ones, these same Kurdish allies are being systematically hunted by Turkish-aligned forces and a resurgent Syrian regime.

Sen. Graham put it bluntly “It would be a disaster for America’s reputation and national security interests to abandon the Kurds, who were the chief ally in destroying the ISIS caliphate.”

Here’s what the Save the Kurds Act aims to do:

  • Impose crippling sanctions on any group or government especially Assad’s Syrian regime engaged in hostilities against Kurdish populations.

  • Send a clear message to Turkey that its long-standing aggression and support for Islamist militias will no longer be tolerated.

  • Signal a renewed commitment to allies who have actually shed blood fighting Islamic terror.

The bill comes at a time when the Kurdish people face yet another existential crisis. A Turkish-backed Syrian government, led by Ahmed al-Sharaa, has launched a new offensive. Islamist militias have reportedly committed atrocities including beheadings and executions of Kurdish fighters. Civilians are under sniper fire in cities like Raqqa, and more than 10,000 ISIS prisoners have escaped detention thanks to the chaos unleashed by this offensive.

Without Kurdish boots on the ground during the ISIS war, the world would be a very different and far bloodier place. Their sacrifices led to key victories like the liberation of Raqqa in 2017 and the final crushing of the ISIS caliphate in Baghouz in 2019.

But under Biden’s watch, America has all but ghosted them.

In 2020, senior officials signaled that the Kurdish mission had “expired.” Since then, Washington has allowed Turkey to carry out multiple cross-border operations and watched silently as Kurdish fighters were slaughtered. Now, the Save the Kurds Act represents one of the last remaining chances to prevent ethnic cleansing on a massive scale.

History has not been kind to the Kurds:

  • In Iran, after the 1979 revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini declared a jihad against them, leading to the execution of thousands.

  • Turkey has spent decades suppressing Kurdish identity, even banning the Kurdish language.

  • Syria’s Kurdish fighters are now branded as terrorists and targeted for extermination.

It’s a repeat of 2014 but this time, the world is pretending not to see it.

Meanwhile, back in Washington, Biden and his national security team are doing what they do best: nothing. They couldn’t even properly withdraw from Afghanistan. Now, they’re on the verge of abandoning another loyal ally, leaving a power vacuum that ISIS is already preparing to fill.

Let’s not forget:

  • Over 11,000 Kurdish fighters died in the war against ISIS.

  • More than 30,000 were wounded.

  • The Kurds helped neutralize an estimated 80% of ISIS fighters during the height of the war.

Senator Graham’s bill is not just about foreign policy it’s about keeping our word and preserving national security. Because if America becomes known as the nation that abandons its allies, who will stand with us the next time the world burns?
