Gaetz and Democrat Unite to Honor Heroic Sacrifice at Trump Rally Shooting

Bipartisan Effort Aims to Recognize Corey Comperatore's Bravery and Condemn Political Violence.

A bipartisan duo of lawmakers, Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), have introduced a resolution to honor Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer firefighter who lost his life protecting his family during the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

The resolution, presented on Tuesday, seeks to recognize Comperatore’s life and service, highlighting his heroic actions during the tragic event. It also calls on U.S. officials and politicians to condemn the attempted assassination of Trump and denounce political violence in all its forms.

“Corey Comperatore should not have lost his life exercising his First Amendment right by going to a political rally,” Gaetz stated. “There is no place for political violence in America! Corey’s selfless and courageous actions exemplify the highest standards of bravery and devotion to both his family and his country. This resolution seeks to commemorate his extraordinary bravery and unwavering commitment to public service after he heroically sacrificed his life while shielding his family from gunfire intended for President Trump.”

Moskowitz echoed Gaetz’s sentiments, emphasizing the bipartisan nature of the resolution. “Corey Comperatore led his life keeping his community safe and spent the last moments of his life shielding his family from danger. No matter what side of the aisle you’re on, those are the brave qualities we should all salute. He deserved the ability to go to a political rally and return home. I hope that my colleagues will join us in honoring his sacrifice.”

During the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a gunman opened fire, injuring Trump and killing Comperatore. Two others, David Dutch (57) and James Copenhaver (74), were also injured. Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, but questions remain about how the gunman accessed the rooftop from which he fired.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro praised Comperatore as a “hero,” recounting how he protected his family by diving on them during the shooting. Trump also expressed his condolences on Truth Social, stating, “Our love goes out to the other victims and their families. We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”

A GoFundMe page authorized by Trump has raised nearly $5 million for the victims, with significant contributions from figures like Kid Rock, UFC president Dana White, and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle is set to testify before the House Oversight Committee next week about the attack, as questions about the security measures at the rally continue to arise.
