Gaetz Proposes Bill to Cut Federal Funding for NGOs Aiding Illegal Immigrants
Legislation Targets Groups Receiving Taxpayer Dollars While Violating Immigration Laws.
In a bold new move to combat illegal immigration, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has introduced legislation that seeks to cut off federal aid to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other entities that assist illegal immigrants. The “Blocking Assistance and Resources to Restrict Illegal Entry and Residency (BARRIER) Act,” unveiled this week, aims to block federal funding for groups that facilitate the entry or continued residency of illegal immigrants in the U.S.
According to the text of the bill, any entity that aids or facilitates illegal immigration will be ineligible to receive federal grants, loans, or other financial assistance beginning the next fiscal year after the bill’s enactment. Violations include providing transportation, shelter, legal assistance, or any financial support to illegal migrants in violation of section 101 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Gaetz, joined by GOP co-sponsors such as Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Andy Biggs (R-AZ), emphasized the importance of holding NGOs accountable, many of which receive billions in taxpayer dollars to help illegal migrants through programs run by federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Billions of taxpayer dollars fund NGOs that operate as de facto agents for illegal immigration.
NGOs reportedly act as a "travel agency" for DHS, helping migrants navigate the U.S. illegally.
This bill would strip federal aid from organizations promoting the violation of U.S. immigration laws.
The growing concern about the role of these organizations has reached a tipping point. According to Charles Marino, a former DHS adviser under the Obama administration, NGOs have become an extension of the Biden-Harris administration’s open-border policies, actively assisting migrants in their efforts to enter and remain in the U.S. illegally.
"NGOs and non-profits serve as the foot soldiers for the Biden-Harris administration’s mass-migration policies by helping illegal aliens cross the border and stay here for years after illegally," Gaetz said in a statement. “The federal government should not be financing the destruction of its own country.”
This move comes as Americans grow increasingly frustrated with the handling of the border crisis, which has overwhelmed communities and drained federal resources. By cutting federal funding to these NGOs, Gaetz and his colleagues hope to dismantle a key element of the current administration's policies, which have seen record numbers of illegal migrants cross into the U.S.
With the 2024 elections looming, immigration is set to remain a central issue. Gaetz’s bill is sure to spark fierce debate, but for now, it represents a clear stance against the ongoing border crisis and the federal dollars enabling it.
