Shooting at Georgia Military Base Leaves Five Injured, Suspect in Custody

Quick action by fellow soldiers prevents mass casualty at Fort Stewart shooting.

A terrifying scene unfolded Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart, the largest U.S. Army base east of the Mississippi, when a 28-year-old Army sergeant opened fire on his fellow soldiers, injuring five.

The suspect an automated logistics sergeant assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team was quickly subdued by fellow soldiers who witnessed the attack and tackled him to the ground before law enforcement arrived. He is now in custody.

“Soldiers in the area that witnessed the shooting immediately and without hesitation tackled the soldier and subdued him,” said Brig. Gen. John Lubas at a press briefing. “That allowed law enforcement to then take him into custody.”

All five victims were treated on base and later transported to Winn Army Community Hospital. Fortunately, they are all listed in stable condition and expected to recover. Their identities have not yet been released.

Key details:

  • The shooting occurred at 10:56 a.m. inside the 2nd ABCT complex, which is also the shooter’s place of work.

  • The suspect, who has not seen combat deployment, reportedly used a personal handgun.

  • He was apprehended by 11:35 a.m., less than an hour after the initial report.

Lubas emphasized that the motive is still under investigation, but the incident involved co-workers and occurred within the soldier’s immediate work environment.

Fort Stewart, located in eastern Georgia, is home to the 3rd Infantry Division and plays a key role in national defense.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement on X “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed and is monitoring the situation closely.

“We are grateful to the brave soldiers who acted quickly and prevented a greater tragedy,” she said.

This latest incident is a sobering reminder that even within secure military installations, danger can come from within. The fact that the shooter was an active-duty soldier assigned to the base underscores the importance of vigilance and mental health monitoring within our armed forces.

Thanks to the courageous and immediate action of fellow service members, what could have been a mass casualty event was contained. Their heroism not only saved lives but demonstrated the strength and discipline of our military community.
