Republicans Move to Stop Foreign Censorship of American Speech

New bill would give Americans the power to sue global tyrants for violating their First Amendment rights.

While Democrats are busy cozying up to global bureaucrats, Republicans are taking real steps to defend American free speech. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has signaled support for legislation that would allow Americans to sue foreign entities who attempt to censor them a bold move to stop international overreach into our constitutional rights.

The bill, modeled after Wyoming’s recently introduced GRANITE Act (Guaranteeing Rights Against Novel International Tyranny and Extortion), is gaining traction. The goal is simple: empower Americans to fight back when foreign governments or globalist organizations suppress speech especially online in violation of the First Amendment.

Jordan confirmed that Congress is seriously considering the measure, saying lawmakers are working to find a “remedy” for foreign censorship. He emphasized the need to explore legal avenues against foreign interference, noting that “we’re taking a good look at that and seeing if there’s something we can do.”

Here’s what the GRANITE Act would do:

  • Create a cause of action for American citizens to sue foreign governments and global organizations that censor speech.

  • Block government partnerships with entities that enforce foreign censorship rules.

  • Push back against foreign pressure, especially from Europe, that targets conservative and patriotic voices in the U.S.

This isn’t just a theoretical concern. The European Union’s Digital Services Act is already being used to strong-arm American tech companies into silencing speech that elites deem “disinformation.” Under this act, U.S. companies can face fines of up to 6% of their global revenue if they fail to comply with European speech codes a staggering number that gives Brussels frightening leverage over U.S. platforms.

Internal documents from the House Judiciary Committee reveal that Europe pressured Big Tech to restrict opinions on topics like mass migration and biological men competing in women’s sports issues that directly impact American policy debates and values.

But the censorship doesn’t stop at the water’s edge.

In February 2024, conservative media outlets including The Daily Wire, The Federalist, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued the State Department over its Global Engagement Center’s collaboration with anti-“misinformation” groups like NewsGuard and the Global Disinformation Index (GDI). The lawsuit rightly points out that these partnerships were used to target conservative media, violating the First Amendment by outsourcing censorship to “neutral” watchdogs who are anything but.

Even Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers have acknowledged that foreign censorship laws are infringing on American rights, and it’s time to take action.

This legislation is long overdue. For too long, Americans have been subject to foreign rules they didn’t vote for, written by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels or Davos who believe they know better than the U.S. Constitution. If this bill passes, it will send a message that American speech belongs to Americans not the EU, the UN, or any other alphabet-soup agency of global control.

It’s time to draw the line. American sovereignty starts with protecting our right to speak freely.
