Trump Praises Florida Rep for Switching from Democrats to GOP
A Florida lawmaker cites values and leadership failures in her move to the Republican Party.
President-elect Donald Trump took to Truth Social over the weekend to celebrate Florida State Representative Hillary Cassel’s decision to leave the Democratic Party and join the Republican ranks. Cassel, representing District 101, is the second Florida legislator to make such a move recently, further solidifying the GOP’s supermajority in the state.
“Congratulations to Hillary Cassel for becoming the second State Representative from the Great State of Florida to switch her Party affiliation from Democrat to Republican,” Trump announced. “I would further like to invite other Disillusioned Democrats to switch Parties, and join us on this noble quest to Save our Country and, Make America Great Again – GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. THANK YOU HILLARY!”
Cassel’s decision, announced last week, signals a sharp critique of the Democratic Party and a commitment to what she describes as a more pragmatic and inclusive Republican approach.
The state representative cited several reasons for her departure from the Democratic Party:
Democratic Leadership Fails to Represent Values: Cassel highlighted her discontent with the party’s inability to connect with everyday Floridians, stating it no longer aligned with her core principles.
Support for Israel: As a Jewish woman, Cassel expressed concern over the Democratic Party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel, particularly in the face of progressive voices she feels condone acts of terrorism.
Focus on Character Over Labels: She emphasized her desire to build a society where individuals are judged by their character and actions, not superficial labels.
“As a proud Jewish woman, I have been increasingly troubled by the Democratic Party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel and its willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism,” Cassel said. “I can no longer remain in a party that doesn’t represent my values.”
Cassel expressed optimism about her future with the Republican Party, acknowledging that while disagreements may arise, she is confident in the GOP’s commitment to collaboration and respect.
“The House Republican Conference empowers members to find common sense solutions to real issues facing all Floridians,” she noted. “They welcome different ideas and collaboration, which is the cornerstone of effective government.”
Cassel also highlighted her determination to prioritize her constituents and work toward meaningful progress for Florida.
Cassel’s switch marks another blow to Democrats in Florida, a state that has seen a noticeable shift toward Republican leadership in recent years. With a solidified GOP supermajority in the Florida House, the party continues to gain momentum, reflecting a broader national trend of dissatisfaction with Democratic policies and leadership.
The GOP’s increasing appeal, driven by a focus on economic growth, individual liberty, and national security, appears to be resonating with disillusioned Democrats and independents alike.
