FishHub Hit Taiwanese Universities
DOJ distinguishes confirmed FishHub victims from networks scanned for weaknesses by a separate tool.
Approximately 20 Taiwanese universities were confirmed victims of FishHub activity, DOJ’s Office of Public Affairs said in its October 8 announcement. The department identified them separately from the networks targeted by the vulnerability-scanning tool Microscan.
CyberScoop reports that FishHub downloads malware onto networks after gaining entry through targeted phishing. DOJ said that, after an initial compromise, the additional malware could provide unauthorized remote access or search for specific files and send them to servers.
Microscan served a different purpose: searching computer networks for weaknesses that could later be exploited, according to DOJ. Its scanning targets included two Taiwanese universities, while the department’s confirmed FishHub victim list included approximately 20. DOJ and the FBI announced court-authorized seizures intended to deny hackers access to both tools.
