FBI Launches Criminal Investigation After Drone Strikes Firefighting Plane

Rogue drone disrupts fire suppression efforts as California wildfires rage.

As wildfires continue to devastate California, the FBI has launched a criminal investigation after a rogue drone collided with a crucial firefighting aircraft, forcing it out of action for days. The shocking incident occurred on January 9 when the drone struck a “super scooper” airplane battling the Palisades Fire near Malibu.

The unauthorized drone, operating in violation of FAA flight restrictions, left a 3 x 6-inch hole in the plane’s left wing, rendering it unable to assist in ongoing fire suppression efforts. Authorities were forced to ground the aircraft for repairs, taking away a key tool in the fight against the destructive blaze.

The FBI is actively searching for the individual responsible, calling for information that could lead to their identity. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has made it clear:

  • Interfering with wildfire suppression efforts is a federal crime, punishable by up to 12 months in prison.

  • The FAA can impose civil penalties up to $75,000 against any drone operator who obstructs emergency response operations.

  • Unauthorized drones in active fire zones endanger firefighters, pilots, and residents, making an already dire situation even worse.

Authorities reported seeing multiple drones near the southeastern portion of the fire on January 12, further jeopardizing air operations.

This reckless act comes as Los Angeles County faces some of the worst wildfires in its history, with thousands of acres burned and countless residents at risk. The destruction could have been even worse due to the temporary loss of critical aerial firefighting resources.

While California’s Democrat leadership misallocates resources pouring millions into defending illegal immigrants instead of wildfire prevention firefighters are now being forced to battle not just the flames but dangerous interference from careless drone operators.

The FBI has vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice, and given the severity of the crime, it’s likely that maximum penalties will be pursued.

With fires still burning and Trump set to return to office, expect stronger enforcement against those who put American lives at risk whether it’s criminal drone operators or failed politicians ignoring real crises.
