Fauci Deflects to CDC Regarding Origin of 6-Foot Social Distancing Measure

Dr. Fauci shifts responsibility to CDC for controversial social distancing guidelines during COVID-19 pandemic.

After previously stating that the six-foot social distancing guideline during the COVID-19 pandemic “sort of just appeared,” Dr. Anthony Fauci now claims that the guideline came from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Fauci, former chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, was scrutinized during a House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic hearing on Monday. He clarified that the CDC was responsible for the six-foot guideline, stating, “The CDC was responsible for those kinds of guidelines for schools, not me.”

  • Original Statement
Fauci’s initial comments, which surfaced last week, indicated he was “not aware” of specific studies supporting the six-foot standard widely adopted in schools and businesses. “It sort of just appeared,” he mentioned, suggesting a lack of rigorous discussion on whether the distance should be five or six feet.

  • CDC's Role
Fauci testified that the CDC's recommendation was based on older studies, which assumed COVID-19 primarily spread through droplets. However, it's now understood that aerosols also play a significant role in transmission.

  • Clarification
Fauci emphasized, “It had little to do with me since I didn’t make the recommendation and my saying there was no science behind it means there was no clinical trial that proved that.” He acknowledged that his earlier remarks had been “distorted.”

Rep. John Joyce (R-PA) confronted Fauci during the hearing about the impact of the six-foot guideline, especially on schools and businesses. Joyce argued that the rule “crippled businesses” and disrupted students' education, exacerbating public distrust in American scientists.

Fauci responded that while he did challenge the CDC on multiple occasions, it was not appropriate to do so publicly. He dismissed the idea that “disinformation” influenced the guidelines.

The controversy surrounding these distancing guidelines highlights the broader issues of communication and trust in public health directives during the pandemic. Fauci’s recent testimony attempts to clarify his role and the origins of the six-foot rule, aiming to restore some level of trust in the scientific community.
