Facebook Fact-Checkers Panic After Zuckerberg Cuts Their Funding
Meta drops left-wing fact-checking program in major free speech shift.
Left-wing fact-checkers are in full meltdown mode after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook is cutting ties with its controversial fact-checking program. The move, revealed on Tuesday, eliminates a major funding source for partisan fact-checking groups and signals a dramatic shift toward protecting free expression on the platform.
The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) which includes notoriously biased organizations like PolitiFact and MediaWise immediately called an emergency meeting to address Zuckerberg’s decision.
IFCN director Angie Holan admitted that the move blindsided them, saying, “People are upset because they saw themselves as partners in good standing with Meta.”
A PolitiFact employee confessed they had “found out this morning at the same time as everyone else”, indicating that Facebook made the decision without consulting its so-called "fact-checking partners."
Holan insisted the program wasn’t about censorship but merely adding "context" to viral claims despite years of conservative media being suppressed based on their ratings.
In a video posted Tuesday, Zuckerberg confirmed that Meta will no longer work with third-party fact-checkers, will end restrictions on sensitive topics like gender and immigration, and will scale back censorship filters that previously targeted conservative voices. He called the recent election a “cultural tipping point” and stressed the importance of free expression moving forward.
Facebook’s fact-checking program has been under fire since its inception in 2016, when it was created in response to President Donald Trump’s election. The initiative quickly became a tool for suppressing conservative news, with outlets like The Daily Wire frequently flagged for so-called "misinformation." Even satire sites like The Babylon Bee were absurdly fact-checked and labeled false.
Facebook actively suppressed content based on fact-checkers' ratings, resulting in throttled reach and reduced engagement for right-leaning news.
The censorship was so extreme that even factual reports contradicting mainstream narratives were flagged as misleading.
Now, with Meta pulling its funding, these fact-checking outfits face an uncertain future.
Without Meta’s financial backing, IFCN members are now facing significant downsizing. Holan admitted, “We may look different in size and scope, but we’ll continue promoting the highest standards in fact-checking.” However, with no major tech giant funding their agenda, their influence is set to decline dramatically.
Zuckerberg’s decision is a long-overdue victory for free speech. After years of social media platforms acting as ideological gatekeepers, Meta’s shift signals the beginning of the end for politically motivated censorship.
