European Parliament Refuses Moment of Silence for Charlie Kirk

Left-wing lawmakers clap as conservative MEP’s tribute is blocked despite previous honors for George Floyd.

In a stunning display of political bias, the European Parliament refused a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk on Thursday, just one day after the conservative activist was assassinated while speaking at a college campus in Utah.

Despite international outrage and bipartisan condolences in the United States, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola denied a formal request for a brief tribute in Kirk’s honor citing “procedural rules” as the justification. The denial came even as several conservative Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) pleaded with their colleagues to recognize Kirk’s murder as an attack on free speech and democracy.

“Our right to freedom of speech cannot be extinguished,” said Swedish MEP Charlie Weimers, who had formally requested the tribute on behalf of the European Conservatives and Reformists group.

The request was supported by MEPs from Germany’s AfD and France’s Identity Liberties movement, as well as Hungarian MEPs from Fidesz but was dismissed outright by the chamber’s left-leaning leadership.

When Weimers tried to yield his own speaking time to conduct the moment of silence anyway, Vice President Katarina Barley immediately cut him off, prompting a fierce backlash. Right-wing lawmakers banged on their desks in protest, while centrist and socialist MEPs applauded the move to silence the tribute.

“We have discussed this, and you know the president said no to a minute of silence,” Barley declared coldly.

The contrast couldn’t be more stark: This same Parliament held a moment of silence for George Floyd an American man with a long criminal record whose death in police custody sparked riots and destruction across the West. But for Charlie Kirk a peaceful activist, husband, father of two, and voice for millions of young conservatives not even a pause.

The hypocrisy was not lost on many.

Hungarian MEP András László blasted the chamber, saying:

“They honored George Floyd. But not Charlie Kirk. This Parliament doesn’t represent the people of Europe it represents the woke elites.”

Outside the chamber, several European lawmakers posted "I am Charlie" graphics a reference to the “Je Suis Charlie” movement following the 2015 Islamist attack on Charlie Hebdo. The message was clear free speech should matter no matter the political ideology behind it.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also weighed in, calling the assassination of Kirk “a deep wound for democracy” and urging world leaders to denounce the rising wave of political violence.

President Donald Trump previously described Kirk as “the best of America,” vowing that his legacy will not be forgotten.

And yet, in Strasbourg, a moment to honor that legacy was shot down not by procedure, but by politics.

Metsola later attempted to save face, saying the Parliament could “possibly” schedule a tribute in October more than a month after Kirk’s murder.

By then, of course, the headlines will have faded and that’s precisely the point. This wasn’t about process. It was about silencing someone who stood for everything the global Left hates: tradition, patriotism, Christian values, and young people who think for themselves.

If Charlie Kirk had been a leftist activist, the EU flags would be flying at half-staff.

But because he was a conservative? They wouldn’t even let the room go quiet.
